Port of Duisburg has announced the cessation of all business activity in Belarus with immediate effect due to the support of the Ukraine war by Belarus.

“We unreservedly close this chapter,” commented duisport’s CEO, Markus Bangen, on a decision that is based on close coordination between the executive board, the supervisory board and shareholders.

Maersk sells its stake in Russian operator Global Ports due to Ukraine war

APM Terminals has decided to sell its shares in Russian port operator Global Ports due to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

This move follows Maersk Line’s decision to halt all bookings to and from Russian ports on 1 March.

Global Ports Investments (GPI) PLC confirmed that the company and its board of directors received on 10 March notice from Maersk-owned port operator, which holds 30.75% of the shares in the company, intends to commence a process to divest its shareholding in the company.

Concerns of “dark ships” evading Russian sanctions

One-third (33%) of UK shipping organisations have revealed that ships going dark is the biggest challenge in sanctions compliance, according to a research study conducted by Maritime Intelligence specialists Pole Star.

A ship typically goes dark by switching off their Automatic Identification System (AIS), meaning they cannot be detectable by public monitoring systems, despite all ships of 300 tons or greater on international journeys being required to broadcast their location.
