The Roman Rock Lighthouse celebrates 159 years of service this Heritage Month. The lighthouse – the fifth oldest in South Africa, and the only one that has been erected on a rock that is awash almost continuously at high water – was first lit on the night of 16 September 1861. The 14-metre circular cast-iron tower is painted white with a white lantern house.
