The Roman Rock Lighthouse celebrates 159 years of service this Heritage Month. The lighthouse – the fifth oldest in South Africa, and the only one that has been erected on a rock that is awash almost continuously at high water – was first lit on the night of 16 September 1861. The 14-metre circular cast-iron tower is painted white with a white lantern house. The optic produces one flash every 6 seconds with a range of 20 nautical miles and is powered by a solar photovoltaic system.

Great Fish Point Lighthouse is one of 45 active lighthouses operated and managed by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), and it is one of few with a lightkeeper. Distressed Crude Carrier off Port St Johns

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) is currently coordinating an emergency response to an immobilised large crude carrier, “YUAN HUA HU”, 309000 dwt built 2015, offshore of the former  Transkei Coastline.  The tanker is safely anchored 1 nautical mile off Dome Bluff on the outskirts of Port St Johns and being monitored by the MRCC.
