Volvo, Mack replacing batteries on electric trucks because of fire risk

Volvo Trucks North America and Mack Trucks are recalling nearly all the battery-powered electric trucks made over the past four years because of an issue that can cause a battery fire.

The recall is the fourth for the trucks since they entered series production in 2022. The latest recall affects 173 Volvo and nine Mack vehicles built between April 1, 2019, and Feb. 10, 2023.

Battery-powered electric trucks are still relatively new on the market. Some of the issues are consistent with new...

Volvo recalls 63,095 trucks for defective wiper motors

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling 63,095 trucks in the U.S. and Canada because the windshield wiper motor can wear out prematurely, limiting visibility in rainy conditions.

No accidents or injuries are linked to the issue, Volvo told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A driver may notice the wipers slowing or stopping intermittently  before the wiper motor gear fails. The risk of a crash increases if the wipers fail.

Volvo decided to conduct a safety recall because...

Electric truck recalls begin to mount — albeit in small numbers

The number of affected vehicles is barely noticeable — until you count the number of recall campaigns. Electric trucks are having early life quality problems.

The latest of 10 electric truck recalls in the past three months was reported on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website Monday. It involves the loss of power to 82 Freightliner eCascadia Class 8 trucks. The electronic axles may have insufficiently welded planetary gear sets.

E-axles and planetary gear sets are components...

Daimler Truck recalls 54,375 trucks for possible windshield wiper defect

A year ago, Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) recalled 689 Western Star trucks for faulty windshield wipers. That issue now has swelled to a recall of 54,375 units affecting six products covering two and three model years depending on the product.

Unlike the first recall, where 100% of the units were projected to have the problem, just 1% of 54,375 trucks in the new recall are projected to experience the defect.

The windshield wiper linkages may break, causing the windshield wipers to fail. On...

Underhood fires prompt Navistar recall of 44,887 older trucks

Navistar is recalling about 45,000 trucks from the 2016-2020 model years because of three under hood fires related to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

The 44,887 vehicles recalled are all susceptible to potential fires. Navistar investigated three fires before determining that low voltage and amperage to the power distribution module (PDM) was the likely cause. The first fire occurred in January 2022.

A wiring terminal that does not meet the continuous electrical current load...

Is Lordstown Motors giving up on Endurance electric pickup?

Lordstown Motors (LMC) issued its first recall, covering 19 Endurance commercial electric pickup trucks because they can stop running without warning. It plans a second recall to address issues resulting from its brake part supplier failing to source components to specifications.

“Our team has also worked closely with our supplier network to root-cause the other post-launch quality issues and develop and implement corrective actions, which have included part quality corrections, part design...

Daimler Truck recalling 64,064 units for possible steering loss

Daimler Truck North America is recalling 19 truck models over three production years for a condition that could lead to the complete loss of steering control and an increased crash risk.

The issue — a loose drag link taper joint — led to the recall of 123,481 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada in September 2021. The issue has not surfaced in the current recall population. But Daimler agreed to the recall “out of an abundance of caution” because of an “unartfully worded” service bulletin.

In both...
