Samsung Heavy wins AiP for LNG carrier with wing sails

The Liberian Registry, the world’s largest registry, and the Korean Register (KR) have granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for the basic design of a wing sail-equipped LNG carrier. The wing sail, an eco-friendly auxiliary propulsion system, generates thrust through lift created by the pressure difference between the upper and lower sections of its wing structure, resembling the form of a sail.

First Venture Global LNG carrier is on the water

The Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoji-si, South Korea, has launched the first of the nine LNG carriers acquired during their construction phase by Arlington, Va., headquartered U.S. LNG export terminal operator Venture Global LNG. The vessels are being built at three South Korean shipyards. Six will have a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic meters each and three a cargo capacity of 200,000 cubic meters each.

Wan Hai names new 13,100 TEU ship

Wan Hai Lines recently held a ship naming ceremony for WAN HAI A15 at the Samsung Heavy Industries Geoje shipyard, coinciding with a charity event on 29 March.

The ceremony was jointly presided over by S.A. Choi, vice chairman & CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries, and Tommy Hsieh, president of Wan Hai Lines.

Following the ceremony, WAN HAI A15 was delivered at the Geoje shipyard and commenced its journey to Shanghai Port to join Wan Hai Lines’ Asia to the East Coast of North America service “AA7”.
