Savannah tops in agricultural exports in 2019

The Port of Savannah was the top U.S. port in terms of containerized agricultural exports in 2019, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) said Thursday.

Agricultural products exported totaled more than 843,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in calendar year 2019, GPA said. Those agricultural volumes accounted for 60% of the port’s exports. Forest products such as wood pulp, paper and logs, as well as clay, cotton and poultry are under the agricultural products umbrella.

Port of Los Angeles in an uphill struggle to regain traffic lost to the east coast

The US port of Los Angeles is looking to technology and increased collaboration to stem the erosion of its container traffic – it ended 2019 with a throughput of 9.33m teu, a decline of 1.28% on the previous year.
Neighbouring Long Beach also registered a drop in container traffic last year, down 5.7% from its 2018 teu count.

Drought forces Panama Canal draught restrictions and pushes up rates

GPA unveils ambitious plans for huge expansion at the port of Savannah

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has underscored its ambition to maintain growth at the port of Savannah with plans to accommodate increasing numbers of ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs).
An expansion programme unveiled on 5 February outlines ambitions for the port to be able to handle six 14,000 teu ships simultaneously by 2024.
