Scrubber Retrofits ‘Three Times’ Cheaper Than LPG Engines

  • Upgrading the VLGC main engines to dual fuel technology using LPG would cost more than three times that of retrofitting scrubbers.
  • The readily available and lower-priced 3.5% HSFO only requires scrubbers on ships and does not need operational changes.
  • The 0.1% and 0.5% low sulphur fuel oil will require tank cleaning, which is not readily available and has no ISO standard.
  • Alternative fuels such as LNG, LPG and ethane, require newbuilding, or can be used with engine retrofitting for dual fuel.

Containership Charter Market Witnesses A ‘Tumultuous’ Year

  • Containership time-charter markets have, with few exceptions, experienced a rollercoaster ride since the start of 2020.
  • Starting with where the recovery has been strongest, among midsize and larger assets, there are several clear drivers of the strong markets seen over the past month.
  • Liner companies were clearly incentivised to capitalise on high spot freight rates as much possible during the recent transpacific import surge.
  • Units chartered for short durations during the transpacific import...

Alphaliner Says That Compliant Fuel Spread Goes in Favour of Scrubbers

According to Alphaliner, the decision by shipowners to invest in retrofitting their vessels with scrubber systems in order to comply with IMO 2020 appears to have been vindicated, reports the Loadstar.

Spread Difference of HSFO & LSFO

The spread between the cost of heavy fuel oil (HFO), currently consumed by ships in most of the world’s sea lanes, and the 0.5% low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO), that will be burned by the majority of vessels for compliance with IMO 2020 is becoming clearer, said the...

Scrubber Fitted Tanker Fleet Too Large To Gain Advantage

  • Seascope’s estimate of scrubber-equipped VLCCs in mid-2020 equates to a quarter of the VLCC fleet.
  • 124 VLCCs are estimated to be retrofitted with scrubbers in 2019 or 2020, on top of the 50 newbuilding VLCCs that are due to be delivered with scrubbers.
  • By mid-2020 a scrubber-fitted VLCC could turn up in the Middle East Gulf and compete directly with other scrubber-fitted VLCCs, than being the unique option.
