UN Shipping Body IMO fails on Black Carbon, lives up to reputation for Climate Inaction

London, April 7th, 2022:- A week that opened with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres lambasting governments and industry for their climate inaction, and the IPCC’s Climate Mitigation report criticising the poor climate governance of international shipping, is set to close with the UN’s shipping agency, the IMO, again kicking climate concerns into the long grass, by failing to reduce the climate impacts on the Arctic fromthe black carbon emissions responsible for 20% of shipping’s climate...

As EU celebrates 30 years of Natura 2000, NGOs call for these areas to be actually ‘protected’ and for an EU-wide trawl ban in them

As EU celebrates 30 years of Natura 2000, NGOs call for these areas to be actually ‘protected’ and for an EU-wide trawl ban in them

Despite a six-fold increase of the Natura 2000 surface at sea in the last 20 years, most threatened marine habitats and species remain in poor conservation status

Strasbourg – As the EU celebrates the 30th anniversary of Natura 2000, NGOs highlight EU countries’ lax implementation of EU nature laws and permissiveness towards widespread destructive fishing, resulting...

International Shipping Body Fails the Arctic and Global Climate Fight

International Shipping Body Fails the Arctic and Global Climate Fight

Civil society groups have damned the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for failing to take action on the Arctic climate crisis, after plans to reduce black carbon emissions from shipping in the Arctic were bumped off the agenda of its Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting (MEPC76), which ended today.

“The IMO and its Member States failed at MEPC76 to carve out the time needed for the urgent development of the...

Ban on Bottom Trawling Could Yield Net Benefits, Study Finds

A socioeconomic analysis commissioned by Seas At Risk and carried out by New Economics Foundation has revealed that a ban on bottom-contacting gear (bottom trawling and bottom dredging) in Marine Protected Areas would yield net benefits as soon as four years after the ban comes into force.

The study highlights that after 13 years of such a ban, there would be €3.41 returned for every €1 spent, with a cumulative net gain equivalent to €8.4 billion over a 20-year period.

European Commission must stop France and Spain from killing thousands of dolphins, warn NGOs

NGOs warn that thousands of common dolphins in the Bay of Biscay face horrific deaths in fishing nets this winter if the EU Commission does not step in with emergency measures to reduce bycatch, the single largest cause of harm and death to these dolphins today. Despite the legal requirement to protect this species and scientific recommendations [1] to close the fisheries responsible for the catches in...

Scientists call for immediate EU action to protect dolphins and porpoises following NGO request

Scientists from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) have published landmark advice today, warning the European Commission that immediate action is needed to protect two critically vulnerable marine species.

A group of NGOs has welcomed the move, which came in response to their major intervention last year.

ICES has urged the Commission to introduce emergency measures,...

EU Fisheries Ministers flout law and allow overfishing to continue in 2020

SAR OCEAN ACT SIGN MAIL

EU Fisheries Ministers flout law and allow overfishing to continue in 2020

EU Fisheries Ministers today failed to meet their legal obligation to end overfishing by 2020, setting fishing limits for the North Sea and North East Atlantic that go beyond the sustainable limits recommended by scientists (e.g. cod in the west of Scotland, Celtic sea sole and pollack in the Bay of Biscay and Atlantic Iberian waters).

As a direct result of this decision, overfishing will further weaken several already...
