Seastreak resumes summer service to New England

Starting Memorial Day weekend, ferry operator Seastreak will resume its summer service connecting New York City and Highlands, N.J., to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

“Not only is this route the longest passenger ferry journey operating within the United States,” says Seastreak, “this year, the journey will occur aboard the largest and fastest high-speed passenger catamaran operating in the country, Courageous.”

Seastreak crew helps save New Jersey boaters

A Seastreak ferry crew came to the aid of four people on a sinking small boat in Sandy Hook Bay, N.J., just minutes before the 21’ craft capsized Saturday.

Officials with Coast Guard Sector New York said watchstanders at the Sandy Hook station heard a 3:50 p.m. mayday call on VHF radio channel 21 that the recreational boat was taking on water. The watchstanders broadcast an urgent marine information broadcast on VHF, and launched small boat crews from stations at Sandy Hook and New York City.

Stranded by snow, New York City commuters escaped by ferries

Commuters fell back on the ferries when an early onslaught of snow and ice locked out commuter bus service from New York City Nov. 15.

Forecasters had warned the region could receive 4” of snow from the storm, but colder than expected temperatures also brought more sleet and freezing rain. That brought on severe road conditions that gridlocked much of the highway network around the city.
