NTSB: Fatigue and complacency led to $10.6 million WSF “hard landing“

The National Transportation Safety Board says that fatigue and complacency led to the Washington State Ferries (WSF) passenger and car ferry Cathlamet striking a mooring structure, or dolphin, at a Seattle ferry terminal last year in an incident that WSF described at the time as a “hard landing.”

The NTSB says that “hard landing” contact resulted in $10.3 million in damages to the vessel and $300,000 in damages to the dolphin, somewhat more than WSF’s initial estimate of $7.7 million.

On August 3, 1916, the steamer Swinomish became the first ship to pass through a complex of locks on the Lake Washington Ship Canal in Washington state. The locks are located at the west end of Salmon Bay and between the Seattle neighborhoods of Ballard and Magnolia.

BNSF, Northwest Seaport Alliance partner on Port of Tacoma rail hub

Western U.S. Class I rail carrier BNSF and the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) are working together to develop a rail hub at the Port of Tacoma that will be known as Tacoma South.

The rail hub will serve the greater Seattle region’s domestic intermodal needs and “unlock capacity” through accommodating more than 50,000 annual container lifts, according to a news release.

Flooding impacts continue in Pacific Northwest

Roads remain closed in parts of the Northwest due to recent flooding.

Constant flow of atmospheric moisture off the Pacific into the Northwest has drenched the region since Sunday, resulting in high water, mudslides and landslides. Similar issues could arise in southern British Columbia as well.

Global logistics giant Expeditors suffers cyberattack, shuts down operations systems

Logistics giant Expeditors International has shut down most of its operations systems after being targeted in a ransomware attack, the company said. 

The effects on the Seattle-based company’s operations have been widespread.  

“While our systems are shut down we will have limited ability to conduct operations, including but not limited to arranging for shipments of freight or managing customs and distribution activities for our customers’ shipments,” Expeditors said in a statement Sunday.
