Shared truckload transportation for high-volume LTL shippers

Transportation industry suffers from too much of a good thing

Consolidating freight moving in the same geographical direction is a long-standing operational challenge.  As e-commerce drives shipment sizes smaller, lead-times shorter and LTL prices inexorably higher, that challenge has become increasingly difficult and expensive for shippers with smaller shipment sizes.

On Tuesday, legacy asset-light brokerage Smith Transportation announced that it has rebranded to iShared Transportation as it focuses on its tech-enabled signature service —  Shared...

Sustainability and profitability: Going green doesn’t have to be costly

Sustainability has garnered a reputation as cutting edge and costly. While it is certainly possible to sink millions into eco-friendly solutions like electric vehicles, there are ways to embrace environmentalism without breaking the bank. In fact, becoming more sustainable can actually drive profits higher.

Flock Freight CEO and founder Oren Zaslansky emphasized the importance of sustainability from the very beginning. As the first certified B Corp in the freight industry, sustainability is at...

Why you’ll never give the partial, LTL or truckload shipping modes your midsize freight again

Faster, safer, better — these consumer expectations for e-commerce delivery are driving a speed-focused freight market. This need for speed has inspired e-tail giants like Amazon to set new shipping standards for same-day delivery. The only way for manufacturers and shippers to provide such quick service? Sending products right away.

Historically, shippers with 10-28 linear feet of freight have had three types of service to choose from:

  • Partial truckload (PTL)
  • Volume less-than truckload (VLTL)
  • Tr...

Do changing LTL limits create new hurdles for shippers?

Every company aims for maximum profitability. The rapid introduction of technology has allowed companies across the supply chain to drill deeper into their business models and discover previously hidden opportunities to bring in more revenue. For less-than-truckload carriers, that has meant lowering linear-foot caps from 16 linear feet to 12 linear feet and turning away freight that exceeds those caps. When less-than-optimal freight is not outright denied, punitive pricing measures make moving...

A healthier planet depends on a greener supply chain

truck in front of windmills

Logistics is a dirty industry. The U.S. is one of the largest carbon emitters in the world, and the movement of vehicles is the number one source of those emissions. Freight trucks are responsible for about 23% of overall transportation in America, making these diesel-burning vehicles responsible for a whole lot of ozone-threatening emissions. Consumers are becoming more aware of both the urgency of climate change and the complexities of the supply chain, while transportation companies are...

New prebate program makes shared truckload more attractive than ever

Companies waste huge amounts of money each year shipping air. In fact, shared truckload innovator Flock Freight estimates that North American companies spend $7 billion annually on truckload (TL) freight that ships with varying amounts of unused space.

For standard TL trailers, the average space utilization when a truck is not completely full comes in at just 66% per shipment, according to Flock Freight. That is the equivalent of moving five out of every 100 trucks completely empty. The...

Modern shipping requires both technological innovation and human expertise

It is obvious that the logistics industry is in the middle of a technological revolution. New digital solutions pop up almost daily, and innovation dominates the conversation at conferences, on calls and around the lunch table. Even as tech propels us forward, one thing has become abundantly clear: People are the backbone of this industry.

Technology plays a critical role in moving freight today. It has made companies more efficient, reduced security risks and paved the way for new mediums like...

Freight start-ups poised to hire despite economic turndown

FlockFreight Series B

The U.S. transportation sector gained 14,600 jobs in August and September of 2020 alone, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This sizable gain is a telltale sign of growth, and has been  beat only three times in the last decade. While the total number of jobs in the sector is still down considerably year of year, the trend we’ve seen over the last two months points to promising recovery from huge drops earlier in the year.

It is no secret that the coronavirus pandemic sent the U.S....
