IMO Approves New Shipping Corridors in Bering Sea to Improve Safety

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), part of the United Nations, approved a joint proposal by the United States and Russia to establish two-way shipping lanes across the Bering Sea and into the Arctic Ocean late last week. The newly adopted measure, bound to come into effect on Dec 1, specifies six two-way routes and six areas of precaution and aims to improve safety of navigation and reduce the risk of incidents and collisions.

While the use of these shipping lanes is voluntary, the...

Ingrid Due Gundersen, CFO Hoegh Autoliners

Ship finance, an exciting rare side of the maritime industry. How does it work, where is the capital? Can that capital be accessed by the new start-ups, or is that only for the traditional borrowers? Who is better to answer all my questions than Ingrid Due Gundersen, now CFO of Hoegh Autoliners, one of the 10 women to watch for the future in the maritime industry?

We also chat about what it’s like to be a woman in a male-dominated industry, where you attend dinners with forty people and you are...

LIBOR: Shipping’s elephant in the room

The shipping industry’s vessel loans are typically taken on the basis of a premium over LIBOR. LIBOR has been experiencing upward pressure since early 2017, as major central banks have moved to a tightening stance. The three-month LIBOR has risen to 2.3% as of April 2018, the highest rate seen since November 2008, the early days of the financial crisis.

As LIBOR increases, stresses on shipping industry balance sheets, cash flows and earnings also rise. With rates still at relatively low levels...

The dry bulk freight market: Just treading water?

A decade has passed since the 2008 dry bulk freight rates began a long downturn which coincided with the Financial Crisis and culminated with a historic low in January 2016. And while many are encouraged by the rebound since then, a cursory look at the Baltic Dry Bulk Index (BDI) indicates how serious the collapse was and how modest and fragile the recovery is.

Not only has the dry bulk market not returned to pre-collapse levels, it’s struggling to maintain freight rates last seen in the...

Yamal LNG Carrier Boris Vilkitsky In Gross Violation of Safety Rules on NSR

The LNG carrier Boris Vilkitsky
, a new ice-class vessel transporting natural gas from Russia’s Yamal LNG project, disregarded a number of safety rules on an Arctic voyage to the Port of Sabetta. The vessel, operated by a Dynagas LNG Partners, a joint venture by Dynagas, Sinotrans, and China LNG Shipping, entered the Northern Sea Route (NSR) despite the inoperability of its stern thrusters and port steering column.

This malfunction, which occurred at least 10 days prior, limited the vessel’s...

Maersk Considers Sending Container Ship Through Arctic But Questions Remain

The Danish shipping company, Maersk, the world’s largest operator of container shipping, is studying the feasibility to position an ice-class container ship on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) to operate between Far East Asia and Northern Europe. In statements made to High North News, Maersk confirmed that the company considers Arctic passage as an option for its new 3,600 container ice-class vessels, which will operate in the North and Baltic Seas. Uncertainty looms over marine fuel sulfur limit: Fuel for Thought

In about 20 months, the shipping industry is going to start burning a fuel that today they know next to nothing about.

The International Maritime Organization has set a January 2020 deadline for a new 0.5% sulfur limit on marine fuels. The move is poised to force most shipowners to switch from burning residual fuel oil to a new, unfamiliar, less-sulfurous product.

A study by CE Delft, commissioned by the IMO in 2016 before it decided to cap the sulfur limit, shows demand for less-than 0.5% sulfur...

Why the container industry needs to replace BAF with a new pricing tool

The container industry has an elephant in the room. It’s big, smelly and has some serious boundary issues. Its name is the Bunker Adjustment Factor and recently it has grown so large that market players can barely see each other behind its fat bulk.

It creates a lot of uncertainty and engenders a lack of trust in the supply chain, which is dangerous for everyone be it a carrier, a BCO or a logistics provider.

With the prospect of volatile times ahead, and bunker prices likely to take the...
