FERRIES 2024: Leading the charge in electrifying Washington State Ferries

Washington State Ferries (WSF), the largest ferry system in the U.S., is at the forefront of system-wide electrification. This summer, WSF advanced its electrification efforts by inviting shipyards from across the nation to bid on the construction of five new hybrid-electric ferries, each designed to carry 160 vehicles. Key suppliers selected for world’s first hydrogen-hybrid research vessel

Ballard Power Systems and Chart Industries have been selected by Glosten and Siemens Energy to provide the fuel cells and hydrogen storage system for what is slated to be the first hydrogen-hybrid research vessel in the world: the Coastal Class Research Vessel (CCRV) to be built for UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography
