FreightWaves partners with Innovative Logistics Group to create The Playbook

The trucking industry’s lifeblood is small carriers. They make up a majority of the operating authorities in the United States, and while large carriers dominate the headlines, small carriers keep the industry running.

Adam Wingfield, CEO of Innovative Logistics Group, has spent the latter half of his career educating small carriers on how to become dominant in their space, delivering business lessons on everything from sourcing freight to hiring employees to remaining compliant with necessary...

Estaba compartiendo...

An Open Letter to the Trucking Industry: The Playbook Is Here

There are moments in life when an idea takes shape in a way you never expected — when the right conversation happens at the right time, setting off a chain reaction that leads to something bigger than you anticipated.

For me, that moment started with a tweet.

I was sharing my thoughts on a compliance issue — one of the many daily battles small carriers and owner-operators face — when Craig Fuller, CEO of FreightWaves, saw it. He reached out via direct message, inviting me to speak at the...

Wanna succeed as a small carrier? Get to know your neighbor.

Know your neighbor.

The advice is common sense for anyone looking to build a business.

But in the rough-and-tumble cyclical freight world, it is essential.

As individual drivers signed on for Department of Transportation trucking authorities during the pandemic, the vision of unending top-dollar-per-mile freight rates — a fixture of social media — blinded some truckers to reality.

As freight rates plummeted in the past year, those who jumped in with both feet — and maybe purchased a used truck at...

Small carriers, owner operators remain lifeblood of transportation during market downturn

Small carriers and owner operators make up the large majority of the nation’s carrier base. Very small carriers – fleets with one to six tractors – account for 86% of total U.S. carriers, according to recent FMCSA data. Small carriers – those with 7 to 19 tractors – make up another 9%. All together, these fleets provide over 30% of the industry’s available power units.

Despite their prevalence in the market, these players tend to be the most affected during market downturns. Smaller teams means...

Software-as-a-service provider T3 Tech this week moved its transportation management system TrueTMS out of stealth mode to help small fleets navigate their business operations.

According to George Thellman, the company’s director of business development and strategic relations, TrueTMS was built from the small fleets’ feedback of available technologies on the market today.

“Oftentimes the big tech companies create overly complicated software and more silos thinking trucking companies of all sizes...

Trucking industry concerned about SEC’s proposed climate rules

A white semi truck is followed by other trucks on a highway with green trees in the background.

Small and large carriers alike are wondering how the Securities and Exchange Commission’s proposed climate disclosure rules could affect their businesses. The regulations would require publicly traded companies to make climate risks and impacts available to investors and the public.

The rules, proposed in March, would require SEC registrants to disclose information about scope 1 (direct), scope 2 (indirect) and scope 3 (supply chain) greenhouse gas emissions.

They would also require companies to...

No holiday for delivery firms as fuel prices remain elevated

Fuel prices hurting delivery firms

As fuel prices have surged in the U.S., last-mile delivery companies have been put in a precarious position. Some have tried to implement surcharges to cover the added costs, while others already had surcharges in place for this scenario. But with fuel prices doubling in some areas in less than two weeks’ time, even surcharges will take time to recoup some of that increase.

In the last week, Uber (NYSE: UBER) and Lyft (NASDAQ: LYFT) have announced surcharges, and DoorDash (NYSE: DASH) has...
