$20 million in small shipyard grants awarded

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (Marad) today awarded $19.6 million in discretionary grants to 24 U.S. small shipyards through the Small Shipyard Grant Program. The funding will help modernize U.S. small shipyards, making them more efficient in constructing commercial vessels.

Group fights to keep Small Shipyard Grant Program funded

The Maritime Administration’s Small Shipyard Grant Program was first authorized in the fiscal 2006 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and codified in the fiscal NDAA budget. (Marad’s definition of a small shipyard is fewer than 1,200 employees.) The program has been a great help to many of the shipyards that build workboats.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (Marad) announced $19.6 million in grants to support capital improvements at 28 U.S. small shipyards as a part of its Small Shipyard Grant program. Provided through Marad’s Small Shipyard Grant program, the funding supports employee training and related improvements that foster increased efficiency and economic growth.

Congress set to vote on Small Shipyard Grant funding

Congress is preparing to vote as early as this week on a budget deal which includes $20 million for the 2019 Small Shipyard Grant Program. Passage this week means the Maritime Administration would post a grant notice by early March and grant applications would be due mid-April. While it’s never over till it’s over, Congress appears poised to pass the law and the President appears willing to sign it, rather than force another government shutdown.
