Call for more help for UK SMEs left out in the Brexit cold

SMEs are facing a disproportionate impact from the UK’s new trading relationship with the EU, leaving many to evaluate whether cross-Channel trade is “worth it”.
Although there were expectations of a far more explosive start to post-Brexit life, the absence of truck queues on the motorway into Dover allowed the UK government to suggest its mitigation measures had been a success, which led to allegations of “spin doctoring of the highest …

Vietnam recovery held back by steep ocean rates and box woes

It’s getting harder and harder for SMEs to find container shipping space ex-Vietnam, opting instead for short-term storage.
Demand for Vietnamese goods is higher than ever, according to forwarders in Ho Chi Minh City, but only multinationals can afford the current steep freight rates.
Tom Tabouring, sales manager at Tin Nghia Logistics, told The Loadstar: “SMEs are looking for overflow warehousing space since they can’t afford – or are not willing to …

‘Abandoned’ SMEs struggling to prepare as final Brexit deadline looms

UK small and medium-sized supply chain businesses claim government indecision and negotiating failures have left them all at sea, as the country prepares for the end of the Brexit transition period.
All UK supply chain companies will be required to operate under new customs and border control procedures from 1 January, but if a trade deal with the EU is reached, some red tape can be cut.
But the lack of clarity …

Booming online freight sales producing a ‘golden age’ for SME forwarders

The rapid uptick in digital freight sales means first-mover advantage is over, according to Freightos.
But, it adds, the industry has entered a “golden age” for SME forwarders.
Speaking at the Container xChange Digital Container Summit last week, Freightos chief marketing officer Eytan Buchman predicted that over half of global freight sales would be made online within the next decade.
“I’m willing to put money on that,” said Mr Buchman. “And our investors …

Unlicensed operators wreak havoc in Latin American forwarding sector

“An incredible rise” in unlicensed, unregulated one-man forwarding operations is posing a threat to Latin America’s forwarding community.
Vice president of Interworld Freight Farouk Gomati told The Loadstar the surge in “effectively illegitimate” operators was chipping away at profit margins.
“In most Latin American countries the word loyalty between clients and forwarders doesn’t exist, they will drop you for $10,” he said.
Small forwarders in particular were feeling the pinch, he added,...
