Early life and career

On this date 110 years ago (March 14, 1912) W. Graham Claytor, Jr. was born in Roanoke, Virginia. He grew up in Virginia and Philadelphia. He graduated from the University of Virginia as a mathematics and physics major. Claytor then attended Harvard Law School, graduating summa cum laude in 1936 after serving as president of the Harvard Law Review.

There are many people interested in former transportation companies, whether they were trucking companies, railroads, airlines or ocean lines. They are called “fallen flags,” and the term describes those companies whose corporate names have been dissolved through merger, bankruptcy or liquidation.

The New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad’s (NYC&StL) 2,200-mile rail network linked Buffalo with Chicago and St. Louis. It competed with a number of other railroads for business in the Midwest.

The Good Roads Movement was a broad-based effort to construct and improve the condition of U.S. roads in the late 1800s that lasted until the National Highway System was begun by the federal government in 1926. 

Interestingly, the movement was started not by early auto or truck users, but by bicyclists back in the 1870s. However, the effort expanded greatly after automobiles began to proliferate.

Georgia Highway Express, was founded by Henry Winship in Macon, Georgia in September 1928. The company’s main operating area was between Macon and Milledgeville, Georgia.

Over the next 30 years it grew and by 1959, Georgia Highway Express had begun to service western Georgia and even a small portion of eastern Tennessee. That year, the company purchased B.C. SR expects enhanced freight loading at NMPT

Southern Railway expects that the mechanised general coal handling facility at New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) could considerably enhance freight loading of its Palakkad Division.

Speaking at the Railway Week Celebrations at Palakkad on Wednesday, June 12, SR’s Principal Chief Operations Manager S.
