NTSB: Time for action on passenger boat fire detection and extinguishing systems

The National Transportation Safety Board has now released its report on the engine room fire that broke out on the passenger vessel Spirit of Norfolk on June 7, 2022. It is again recommending that engine-room fire detection and fixed fire extinguishing systems be installed in small passenger vessels currently grandfathered out under USCG Subchapter K regulations.

The cruise yacht Spirit of Norfolk was towed to Colonna’s Shipyard, Sunday, following a fire that broke out June 7 and was not finally declared extinguished until 9.58 a.m., Saturday, June 11.

The Spirit of Norfolk cruise yacht was reported a “still smoldering” this morning, two days after an incident that began when the City of Norfolk, Va., received a 911 call at 12.06 p.m., June 7, that the vessel was on fire, with over 100 people onboard, near Pier 3 at the Norfolk Naval Base.
