Port of Oswego gets $4 million for cargo-handling and rail upgrades

The Port of Oswego, located on Lake Ontario along the New York shoreline, has received a $4 million federal grant to acquire new cargo handling equipment and improve rail infrastructure.

Funding from the U.S. Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) will enable the port to increase export capacity, which will in turn benefit local businesses seeking access to global export markets.

Most of us think of Detroit as the home of the major U.S. auto manufacturers and the birthplace of Motown. Of course it is both of those things and many more, but it is also a port city. 

Detroit was founded as a trading post in 1701 by French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. He claimed the area between the upper and lower Great Lakes for France. By 1751, the area was known as Petit Cote (Little Coast).

U.S. grain, project cargo strong as 2020 shipping season nears end

Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway ports and ship operators are hoping for a strong finish to an otherwise turbulent year. Cargo totals on the St. Lawrence Seaway hit nearly 32.3 million metric tons (from April 1 to November 30), down 6.6% from 2019.

Compared to previous months, the improvement in total cargo figures in November is due in large part to grain shipments, which have been strong since the fall harvest began. Year-to-date grain shipments via the Seaway (including Canada and the U.S.)...
