St. Louis region most efficient US inland port district, data shows

New data from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shows the St. Louis region is home to the most efficient inland port district in the country.

The data was based on tons moved per river mile in 2022, the most recent year for which numbers are available. According to a news release from the St. Louis Regional Freightway, the region’s barge industry handled a whopping 369,309 tons per mile, around four times the average tons per mile moved by the other eight U.S. inland port districts.

Ex-driver recruiter accused of wire fraud

A federal grand jury has indicted a former driver recruiter for two Missouri trucking companies on five counts of wire fraud.

The indictment, filed in U.S. District Court in St. Louis, claims that Michelle Serth-Stein, 50, of Smithton, Illinois, submitted fake recruiting expenses for reimbursement from October 2017 to January 2019 while working as a driver recruiter for Midwest Systems. The intermodal logistics company, headquartered in St. Louis, has 61 power units and 46 drivers.

Coast Guard closes five miles on Mississippi after St. Louis bridge allision

A towboat crew narrowly escaped injury when their vessel struck the Eads Bridge at St. Louis, Mo., Thursday, prompting the Coast Guard to close a five-mile stretch of the upper Mississippi River.

The 80.6’x30’x11’, 2,600-hp towboat Legacy, operated by Enterprise Marine Services LLC, Houma, La., was pushing barges downriver when the allision happened off the right descending bank.
