Saab launches Gotland-class submarine HMS Halland after mid-life upgrade

Saab’s Karslkrona, Sweden, shipyard yesterday launched the submarine HMS Halland following a comprehensive mid-life upgrade. HMS Halland is the third and final submarine in the Gotland class to undergo the upgrade, which includes new technologies and systems of the same type that will be used in upcoming Blekinge class (A26) submarines.

The Gotland class was the world’s first submarine class in operation with a Stiring air independent propulsion (AIP) system.

SSN 796 successfully completes its initial sea trials

Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) reports that its Newport News Shipbuilding division has successfully completed initial sea trials of the Virginia-class attack submarine New Jersey (SSN 796)

SSN 79 spent several days at sea to test the boat’s systems and components. Testing included submerging the submarine for the first time and conducting high-speed maneuvers while on the surface and submerged. Electric Boat gets $967 Virginia class contract mod

General Dynamics Electric Boat has been awarded a $967 million contract modification from the U.S. Navy for lead yard support and development and design efforts for Virginia class fast-attack submarines.
