SCA seeks to head-off ships diverting via Cape of Good Hope

In an effort to keep container vessels transiting its waterway the Suez Canal Authority has cut its vessel transit rates, by up to 75% for some ships.

A number of vessel owners have taken advantage of the low cost of bunker fuel, the price of which has fallen following the collapse of crude oil prices earlier this year. By sending ships around the African Cape owners can save Suez Canal charges and use vessel capacity which would otherwise be idle.

Suez Canal bans open loop scrubbers

Suez Canal Authority (SCA) made clear that will continue allow ships to use heavy fuel oil (HFO) when transiting through the waterway, without the need of scrubbers, despite the recently IMO introduction of low-sulphur regulations. Suez Canal achieves all-time traffic record

According to Xinhua, the traffic transmitting through Suez Canal accomplished an all-time record, as it achieved the highest tonnage per day in the waterway’s history, as Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mamish reported in a statement.

Suez Canal marks its second-highest ever record

Head of the Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mamish said that the canal recorded on Wednesday, May 22, its second-highest record of daily tonnage in its history. According to Mamish, 68 ships crossed the canal in both directions carrying a total load of 5.5 million tons.
