Low Sulfur Fuel Oil Debuting in Global Market

  • Viva Energy is now producing IMO2020 grade fuel oil at its Geelong refinery in southern Australia.
  • Marine fuel used in Australian waters is currently restricted to 3.5% sulfur bar in some ports, which will change to 0.5% from next year.

IMO 2020: An opportunity for China’s bunker fuel sector?

China’s ports handle nearly a third of global container traffic and it has the largest merchant fleet in the world in terms of the number of ships owned.

But given the size of its fleet and the number of ships that pass through its ports, China plays a surprisingly small role in bonded bunkering – the provision of fuel sold tax-free to ships travelling between countries across international waters.

It is not China but Singapore that dominates Asian bunkering. Just under 50 million metric tons of...

Dynamics in Oil Market Favors Chinese Refiners

  • Distillate demand from shipping has prompted Chinese refiners to use light-cycle oil w to increase volumes of IMO2020 compliant fuel.
  • Blending light cycle oil is cheaper than extracting distillates from crude oil.
  • An increase in blended fuel oil in the bunker market has been marked as an aftermath of the global 0.5% sulfur cap on bunker fuel.

Distillate demand from shipping has prompted Chinese refiners to use light-cycle oil which can be blended with diesel fuel to increase volumes of...

China Introduces Battery Power Project for River Shipping

  • Eve Energy and Shanghai Hanshun Shipping are to develop battery power for River transport.
  • China has taken considerable precautions to restrict the impact of ship pollution on its mainland.
  • That 0.5% sulfur cap will be applied to shipping globally from the start of next year.

Trump administration may struggle to obstruct IMO 2020

The International Maritime Organization is much like the large commercial ships it regulates in one respect: while slow to get moving in the first place, it can be difficult to stop once its inertia has been overcome.

This is the problem the US delegation at the UN body may face at a key meeting being held October 22-26, if it seeks to put obstacles in the way of tighter marine fuel sulfur emission limits.

The IMO’s global sulfur cap is due to drop from 3.5% to 0.5% at the start of 2020, with...

Asia bunkering industry preparing for IMO 2020 sulfur deadline: Fuel for Thought

From Cosco in China to Posco in South Korea, Asian companies are pouring in millions of dollars to upgrade their shipping fleets as the International Maritime Organization’s deadline for cleaner bunker fuels inches closer.

With less than 16 months remaining, the global shipping industry is setting aside about $60 billion to obtain the right infrastructure in order to embrace cleaner shipping fuel.

The IMO’s global fuel sulfur cap is set to drop from 3.5% to 0.5% at the start of 2020, forcing...
