Despite a 24% Drop in 2022, Share Of Scrubber Ships Is Likely To Increase

In order to comply with sulphur emission limitations, ships must now utilise ultra- or low-sulfur fuel (such as ULSFO or VLSFO). Ships can still utilise heavy fuel oil (HFO), which is less expensive if they install a scrubber. However, it has shown that the price premium for VLSFO is not as great as first thought, as reported by BIMCO.

Shippers Urged To Follow Local Restrictions Before Discharging Washwater

  • IMO considers exhaust gas scrubbers to reduce vessels’ sulphur emissions.
  • It specifies requirements for verification, testing, survey, and certification of scrubber systems.
  • It also sets out the criteria for discharging scrubber wash water into the sea.
  • Vessel operators have two options to choose to ensure compliance with the sulphur limits.
  • They can switch to a closed-loop scrubber or compliant fuels.
  • The vessels must maintain proper records of such a changeover.

Switch To IMO 2020 Fuels, So Far, So Good?

  • The much-feared spectre of widespread problems for ships consuming new VLSFO blends since the start of IMO 2020 has, so far, failed to materialize.
  • The shipping industry has largely experienced a smooth sailing six months into the implementation of IMO 2020.
  • Crew proficiency and adequate crew training are important in order for vessels to pinpoint issues, do proper reporting and make contingency plans.

Cruise Ships Poisoning City Air With Sulphur As Much As Cars – Research

Cruise ships poisoning city air with sulphur as much as cars – new data reveals

Cruise ships are choking Europe’s port cities with the biggest cruise company, Carnival Corporation, emitting 10 times more sulphur oxides (SOx) than all of Europe’s 260 million cars, new research shows. Royal Caribbean Cruises, the world’s second largest cruise operator, emits four times the SOx of the European car fleet.
