Poor communication on vessel arrival time is the biggest pain-point for container shippers, according to MarineTraffic.
The vessel tracking specialist calculated that over 22% of commercial vessels arrive at their destination a day later than planned, with 15% making intermediate stops between departure port and destination.

Better visibility and more responsive supply chains are the only way for shippers and their forwarders to respond to problems related to slow-steaming and containership schedule unreliability.

Flexport buys online container tracking specialist Crux Systems
US digital-first freight forwarder Flexport has completed the acquisition of container tracking and shipment visibility company Crux Systems, for an undisclosed amount.
Crux Systems was founded in 2014 by Eric Klein and Jennifer Colvin who set out to automate container shipment visibility so that shippers, freight forwarders and hauliers could “receive data such as gate-out updates faster than carriers would provide them directly”.

Shippers want more transparency from those who handle their ocean freight
Shippers have called on carriers, infrastructure operators and freight service providers to improve visibility in the ocean freight supply chain.
Speaking at the European Shippers’ Council’s Maritime Day in Rotterdam last week, Bart Kuipers of the city’s Erasmus University said ports had a particularly bad reputation.
