For ocean shippers moving imports to destinations in the United States, it’s that peak season surcharge time of year.

French carrier CMA CGM this week announced surcharge updates on three of its services to the U.S. that included two surcharge postponements.

Implementation of a $1,000 peak season surcharge (PSS05) on all containers was postponed for the fourth time, from Jan. 15 to Jan. 18, on services from the Indian Subcontinent, Middle East Gulf, Red Sea and Egypt to the U.S. East and Gulf...

LA/Long Beach delay port congestion fees again

Gantry cranes lifting containers onto stacks at a port.

Port officials in Los Angeles and Long Beach have delayed imposing controversial congestion fees for a fourth consecutive week, increasing the likelihood that the fees will never be assessed.

The port authorities said the excess storage surcharge has been postponed until Dec. 13.

The fees have had their intended effect of getting users to clear long-stored containers from terminals, according to port officials. Containers that dwell more than nine days for local truck drayage and more than six...

Seattle port operator tackles congestion with new container storage fee

Port cranes extend sideways across a vessel full of containers.

SSA Marine has notified importers at its Seattle port facilities that it will introduce an additional storage charge on Wednesday for containers lingering longer than five days in an effort to clear space so stevedores can better service vessels and reduce cargo delays.

The cargo-handling company said it will temporarily levy a $50-per-day fee on containers dwelling longer than five days after they are made available for pickup at terminals 5, 18 and 30 in the Port of Seattle. The late pickup...

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach for a second time have postponed collection of a new surcharge on long-dwelling containers, saying progress by ocean carriers and shippers has reduced the amount of aging containers on the docks by a third. Fees will not be assessed before Nov. 29, the port authorities said Monday.

The penalties of $100 per day on loaded import containers moving by truck that sat for nine or more days, and for units sitting for six or more days that move by rail, were...

Captive cargo: Small businesses most at risk from SoCal port gridlock

Punitive charges that went into effect Monday at the Port of Los Angeles for containers left on the docks too long are a last resort to help shippers retrieve urgent cargo trapped under a massive backlog, said Executive Director Gene Seroka at Friday’s emergency Harbor Commission meeting. He implored large companies that don’t need products right away, and have overflowing warehouses, to find alternative storage in the region so small businesses can get orders they need to survive.

“There is no...

Parcel carriers institute fees to deter over-maximum packages from their networks

Major parcel carriers are setting their sights on primarily delivering smaller packages as an increase in demand for consumer deliverables is outstripping their capacity to handle large parcels. John Hagi, AIT’s director of residential delivery and special services, explained that carriers would rather deliver smaller parcels than larger ones.

“AIT is seeing significant increases in opportunities for carriers to move their business out of the non-conveyable movement of freight and focus their...
