By Lewis McLellan in London

A group of 74 Japanese banks and corporations is forming a system to digitise bank deposits, creating a blockchain payments network. The system neatly circumvents a number of thorny questions about the legal status of stablecoins as well as exploring creative uses of the technology, like green certificates for clean...

Shell shifts sustainable fuels focus to aviation sector

Shell aims to produce 2 million tons of sustainable aviation fuel annually by 2025.

Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS.A) is building on its sustainable transition goals with an ambition to produce 2 million metric tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) per year by 2025.

“Currently, sustainable aviation fuel accounts for less than 0.1% of the world’s use of aviation fuel. We want to help our customers use more SAF,” Anna Mascolo, president of aviation at Shell, said in a release Monday.

As the mode of transport that emits the most greenhouse gases per ton mile, aviation is an...

Lufthansa replicates sharkskin to boost fuel efficiency of cargo jets

Close up a Lufthansa aircraft tail with logo about "shark" skin technology for better aerodynamics.

Lufthansa Cargo next year will cover its fleet of Boeing 777 freighters with a high-tech coating that mimics the structure of a shark’s skin to reduce aerodynamic drag and fuel consumption, the company said Monday.

The low-friction film consists of riblets measuring about 50 micrometers that imitate the properties of sharkskin and allow air to flow more smoothly over the aircraft during flight. Sister company Lufthansa Technik developed the new AeroShark technology with German chemical...

Lufthansa Cargo (LSE: LN) and third-party logistics provider DB Schenker are using a purchase of sustainable aviation fuel as a signal to customers and logistics companies that they should do more to protect the climate by moving away from fossil fuels in aviation.

On Monday, a Boeing 777 freighter operated by Lufthansa Cargo completed the first commercial cargo flight in which the trip’s fuel requirements were covered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), amortized over time through other flights...

5 air cargo sustainability trends for 2021

Air cargo makes sustainable progress going into 2021.

Nothing expresses the importance of air cargo quite like the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) “Ode to Air Freight.” An estimated 7.4 billion parcels are flown each year, and approximately 2.5 million lives are saved every year thanks to vaccines shipped via air, according to the IATA.

Air transport is responsible for 2% of global carbon emissions. As government regulations evolve and public support to fight climate change increases, aviation companies are looking for new...

Amazon to power cargo jets with sustainable fuel

An Amazon Air plane takes off, view from behind as it gets airborne.

Amazon’s air cargo operation is contributing to meet the company’s goal of being carbon neutral by 2040 with an agreement to purchase up to six million gallons of jet fuel made from renewable sources.

The fuel blend, which includes feedstock of agricultural waste fats and oils, has the ability to reduce Amazon Air’s carbon emissions by 22%, Sarah Rhodes, vice president of Amazon Global Air said on a video describing the initiative and showing Prime planes being loaded with cargo and refueled
