US woman’s corpse found in container in Taiwan’s Taichung port

A woman’s corpse was found in a container in Taiwan’s Taichung port on 16 November.

Due to a stench emanating from the container at berth 32, port workers opened the purportedly empty box, and made the gruesome discovery. The police were notified around 3 pm (local time).

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the heavily decomposed corpse, which had no noticeable injuries. One jacket, one backpack and one wallet were found alongside the corpse.

Bicycle components cause container fire on CNC Line ship

A ship operated by CMA CGM’s intra-Asia arm CNC Line had to make an emergency stop at Taiwan’s Taichung port after a fire broke out in a container carrying used bicycles.

Feeder ship involved in fatal accident in Taiwan

Around 11 am local time yesterday (21 February), a pilot fell into the sea while boarding the feeder vessel Blue Ocean, which is operated by Shanghai Jinjiang Shipping on a China-Taiwan service.

The pilot surnamed Chong, 58, was retrieved from the waters and rushed unconscious to hospital, but died. Taiwanese media reports indicated that Chong lost his balance due to strong winds amid the north-eastern monsoon season.

Taiwan agencies accuse port corporation of favouritism

Fifteen trade associations, representing shippers, ship agencies, and container transporters, have accused Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) of favouring Kaohsiung port by providing various discounts and incentives.

In a letter signed by 15 parties, the group said the incentives discouraged other ports, such as Keelung and Taichung, from being used, and placed unnecessary cost pressures on their members.

CCTC fixes larger cranes, adding capacity, in Keelung

China Container Terminal Corporation (CCTC) will spend close to US$7 million to fix new cranes at its terminals in Keelung ports to cater to 10,000 TEU ships.

The current set of cranes can handle only ships of up to 8,000 TEU. CCTC’s deputy general manager Tsai Te-Hsin said that the move will make its three docks in Keelung more efficient.
