Carpenter dies after bulker accident in Kaohsiung

A 26-year-old carpenter working on a cargo hold in a ship anchored in Taiwan’s Kaohsiung port died on 8 January, after a cable broke loose and struck his head.

Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC), which oversees all ports on the island, said that the incident took place around 1.40 pm on 8 January on the Savita Naree, a Singapore-flagged 2016-built Ultramax bulk carrier that arrived in Kaohsiung on 7 January.

Angel sinking: Taiwanese authorities seek over US$9 million from Norwegian insurer

Taiwan International Ports Corporation’s Kaohsiung branch is seeking TW$304 million (around US$9.4 million) for clean-up costs and lost fishermen’s earnings following the sinking of the Palau-flagged boxship Angel on 21 July 2023.

Wan Hai to spruce up Kaohsiung terminal no. 5 for over US$300 million

Wan Hai Lines will spend over US$300 million to refurbish Terminal No. 5 in Kaohsiung Port.

The ports of Kaohsiung and Busan signed a sister port agreement in a ceremony on 29 August at the headquarters of the Busan Port Authority (BPA) in South Korea.

Kaohsiung to deepen HMM’s terminals to accommodate giant ships

Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) will spend around US$142 million to excavate the waters around berths 76, 77 and 78 as South Korean flagship carrier HMM has agreed to renew its lease.

In May 2017, HMM took over operations of the three berths from its former compatriot peer Hanjin Shipping, which was declared bankrupt in February of that year. The three berths have an annual handling capacity of 640,000 TEUs and are added to HMM’s existing terminal at berths 118 and 119.
