Snapshot: Port volumes as muddy as hell

Preliminary port throughput data for the world’s largest 25 container ports has been published by Alphaliner this week.
The headline is that 13 of the top 25 saw growth, and 12 saw box volumes shrink – we should be wary of extrapolating this to the wider port market however, as it is still unclear whether their gains are the result of market growth or more simply the result of smaller ports’ losses (check Dalian below).

Surge in transhipment traffic pushes port of Tanjung Pelepas to a new record

Malaysia’s port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) saw 8% growth in 2020, to a record-breaking 9.8m teu, making it an outlier among South-east Asia’s competing transhipment hubs.
The growth the port, which is operated by Maersk subsidiary APM Terminals as the carrier’s key transhipment hub in the region, came despite global economic uncertainties and the Covid-crisis .
PTP CEO Marco Neelsen explained the reasons: “A surge in extra transhipment volumes, due to the …

As shipping’s ‘seasonal lull’ remains anything but, rollovers continue to climb

Container rollovers at the world’s leading transhipment ports began to climb again last month, according to new research from tracking data provider Ocean Insights.
After a global decline in rollovers during September, there were increasing numbers of shipments missing their scheduled loadings with almost every carrier.
“This is supposed to be container shipping’s seasonal lull after the summer peak season,” said Josh Brazil, chief operations officer at Ocean Insights.
“But on some tradelanes, …

Colombo port congestion brings extra expense for Bangladeshi shippers

Feeder vessel operators to and from Chittagong and the hubs of Colombo, Singapore and Port Klang are to slap emergency cost recovery surcharges (ECRS) on outbound and inbound shipments to Bangladesh.
The moves comes amid acute congestion at the hubs, linked to pandemic-related reduced numbers of port workers,
Feeder vessels calling at Colombo are facing waits of up to five days and, in Singapore, more than two days to get a berth. …

Fewer transhipment boxes being ‘rolled’ as capacity returns to major trades

Fewer containers are being ‘rolled’ at major ports, according to new data from predictive ocean container tracking data provider Ocean Insights.
It has revealed that the rate of container rollovers at the world’s largest transhipment ports has begun to decline as carriers have returned capacity to major trades – but the number remains significantly higher than a year ago.
According to Ocean Insights, the percentage of transhipment containers rolled at the world’s …

Supply chain radar: Should Westports invest in the hub or its spokes?

The coronavirus pandemic has exposed the vulnerabilities of listed companies in every aspect of the supply chain, but those exposed to restricted geographies have arguably come under greater scrutiny than global operators where weaknesses in one part of the portfolio could be offset against better performing regions.
Ports investing
In the port sector this is especially true, and hence Drewry Maritime Financial Research’s 25 June assessment of Malaysian container terminal operator Westports …

Malaysia’s PTP signs up for Portchain terminal and berth optimisation software

Portchain has signed up Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) for its AI-powered berth optimisation software.
According to Thor Thorup, Portchain’s chief commercial officer, the firm’s Berth Optimisation Engine will enable PTP to deploy assets such as labour, cranes and berth capacity more effectively, increasing productivity and reducing costs.
“Furthermore, the application enables better collaboration between terminal departments, as well as allowing the port to operate as a ‘paperless’...

Malaysia must seek new markets as global tensions impact trade

Malaysia’s imports fell to the lowest level in ten years in August, highlighting a slowdown in freight demand amid global trade tensions.
According to Kuala Lumpur-based MIDF Research, Malaysia’s August imports contracted year on year by 12.5%, the worst performance for ten years. Exports fell 0.8% in the same period – but the analyst still expects overall export growth of 1.7% this year.
