Kirby implements coronavirus response plan

Kirby Corp., the nation’s largest inland and coastal tank barge line, has implemented an emergency plan to with deal the coronavirus crisis.

Kirby fined $2.2 million for British Columbia grounding, fuel spill

A Canadian court has fined Houston,Texas-based Kirby Offshore Marine Corp. $2.9 million (US $2.2 million) for the October 2016 grounding and fuel spill of the tugboat Nathan E. Stewart in British Columbia’s Inside Passage.

Some 29,000 gallons of diesel and lubricants spilled in the accident, which happened when the second mate piloting the articulated tug-barge unit fell asleep while on watch and missed a planned course change, according to Canadian and U.S. investigators.

Main Iron Works completes first in trio of new Kirby towboats

Main Iron Works, Houma, La., recently completed the first in a series of three Subchapter M certified 2,68-hp towboats for Kirby Inland Marine.

The 88’x35’x9’Bailey is powered by a pair of Caterpillar 3512C-HD diesel engines, turning 1,340 hp at 1,600 rpm each through Twin Disc MG-5600 gears with 6.04:1 reduction ratios and a shaft braking system. Ship’s service power is provided by two John Deere 99 kW gensets.
