Viewpoint: NLRB sets its sights on independent contractor misclassification

The general counsel for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has set its sights on independent contractor misclassification under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). Significantly, the initial target for implementing this new enforcement strategy was a group of affiliated transportation, logistics and brokerage companies. The general counsel recently issued a complaint against these affiliated transportation companies, alleging that they were joint employers who violated the NLRA by...

The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has named Charles Bearden, from Etowah, Tennessee, a Highway Angel for stopping to help another truck driver whose tractor-trailer was thrown into a field by a tornado.

The evening of Dec. 10, 2021, is one many people won’t forget for the string of devastating tornadoes that struck the South and Midwest. Bearden had picked up a load in Jackson, Tennessee, that day and was heading west on Interstate 155 near the Tennessee-Missouri border.

Highway Angel of the Year extinguished potentially deadly car fire

One early November morning in 2020, Christopher Lloyd was somewhere he wasn’t usually. The Airline Transportation Specialists driver had been pulled in to assist when another driver was unable to complete his run. Perhaps it was destiny.

“That wasn’t my normal run that night,” Lloyd said. “The driver that usually takes that run had broken down. The dispatcher called and asked if I could take it. I was delayed by over an hour, but somehow it all lined up for me to be there at that precise moment...

Viewpoint: Truck parking remains key industry issue

Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) Chairman Jim Ward describes our nation’s roads and bridges as a truck driver’s office, and good parking as their home away from home. But with only one truck parking space for every 11 drivers, the trucking industry desperately needs more parking.

Truck drivers consistently rank parking availability as a top concern in annual surveys. When drivers cannot readily find parking, they are forced to park illegally or continue searching, often violating federal...

‘As I See It’ from the Trucking Activist: Benchmarking in truckload

As we prepare to embark on yet another Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) Annual Convention, I harken back 20 years ago when the TCA leadership reached out to me about the possibility of starting a benchmarking program for trucking, much like the “20 Group” programs found in the automobile and truck dealer industry. I remember those days in 1987 fondly as a member of a Truck Dealer group. It was by far the most important management move I ever made in my career. The benefit of sharing actual...

On the morning of Dec. 27, Scholl was hauling a full truckload of freight on Canada Highway 3 near Moyie, British Columbia, when he noticed other drivers flashing their lights, signaling that there was something up ahead.

“The roads were in poor condition from ice and snow,” Scholl told the TCA. “As I crested a hill,...
