Climbing rates, detention times turn LTL fleets toward trailer tracking tech

Historically, the less-than-truckload carrier market has resisted trailer tracking technology, since locating LTL cargo has been a simpler task compared with full truckload. But recent labor shortages, supply chain congestion and extremely tight capacity have created the perfect storm: exacerbated accessorial detention charges and growing tensions between shippers and LTL carriers. As a result, LTL carriers have implemented drop-trailer programs as a way to gain more capacity.

With drop-and-hook...

Spiking consumer demand for sustainability makes visibility-tech a must

Truck driving on highway with wind turbines

2020 marked a turning point in consumer behavior. Not only did the sudden stay-home requirements shift how people shopped for food and other basic necessities, research shows that the shared struggle of COVID-19 and the witnessing of California wildfires and Midwestern floods gave consumers the time, space and motivation to evaluate their priorities when selecting certain brands. Namely, consumers began to look for brands that valued not just their personal well-being, but the protection of the...

Private fleets are an expensive response to ongoing volatility

truck passing on highway

The hunt for available capacity is the ongoing refrain since the pandemic shifted consumer buying habits. According to a recent McKinsey survey of CPG companies, 80% of those companies have no expectation that pandemic-fueled transportation costs will decline anytime soon.

A May report from BSI, a London-based standards and supply chain intelligence firm, suggested that while immediate effects of the pandemic are easing worldwide, the long tail of the pandemic is ongoing and may include...

How can trucks reduce fuel consumption?

A common theme for driving down greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from vehicles has been centered around a common narrative: switching to electric vehicles. Unfortunately, making this switch does not eliminate all emissions, as a majority of the leftover GHG emitted comes from the production of electricity to fuel the vehicle.

The investment in one of these vehicles can range up to $150,000 to $180,000, something that may be difficult for smaller owner-operators to afford.

Fortunately, there are...

Orbcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: ORBC) on Wednesday reported a fourth-quarter net loss of $14.8 million, with a per-share loss of 19 cents.

The 19 cents per-share loss for the fourth quarter was largely the result of a $11.7 million loss on debt extinguishment, Orbcomm said. Adjusted to extinguish debt, the loss was 4 cents per share.

“While the pandemic caused significant disruption, we showed our resilience,” Marc Eisenberg, president and chief executive officer of Orbcomm, said during the company’s...

Telematics help maximize existing capacity and decrease driver dwell times

Truck picks up containers at port

The fight to secure trucks continues into late January, even after the expected loosening of post-holiday capacity when volumes ease and drivers return to the road. While tender rejections are following a seasonal downward pattern, the levels are much higher than two years prior and carriers are still rejecting almost one out of every four tenders at contract rates.
