As market overcapacity subsides, shipowners start to order newbuilds again

Container carriers and non-operating shipowners (NOOs) appear to have finally reacted to the severe capacity constraints in the global vessel fleet with a surge of new orders with shipyards.
According to new Alphaliner analysis, after a sustained period in which few new shipbuilding contracts were signed, with the industry struggling to manage structural overcapacity, “the last two quarters have seen a massive wave of fresh containership newbuilding orders, especially for ultra …

Neglected: ageing mid-sized box ship fleet in ‘acute need of renewal’

The ageing fleet of small to medium-sized containerships needs replacing but carriers and non-operating owners have neglected to invest in these crucial workhorse vessels, according to Alphaliner.
“Over the past years, carriers have primarily placed orders for very large and ultra-large containerships,” said the consultant, noting that both the shipping lines and NOOs had “neglected the medium sized sector from 4,000-9,000 teu”.
A carrier contact admitted to The Loadstar recently that it …

HMM awash with box ships as the other top ocean carriers cut capacity

Every deepsea carrier has reduced its operated capacity this year, except South Korea’s HMM, which is taking delivery of a series of the world’s largest vessels.
And, in a double-whammy, the carrier has also seen nine ships, amounting to nearly 100,000 teu, returned from its former 2M partners, according to new research from Alphaliner.
As part of a cooperation agreement signed in 2017, 2M partners Maersk and MSC had chartered the vessels …

More blanked voyages certain on transpacific and east-west trades

South Korean carrier HMM’s latest ULCV, the HMM Algeciras, which at 23,964 teu is the world’s largest boxship, made its maiden call at Hamburg yesterday, exchanging some 13,600 teu in a single call.
The fate of the vessel remains unclear however, as it has been deployed on THE Alliance’s Asian-North Europe FE4 service, which is shortly to be merged with the FE2 string; alliance members rationalising capacity in the wake of …

Hamburg set to see more ULCV calls as Elbe ‘passing box’ is completed

Ocean carriers serving the port of Hamburg will benefit from a significant reduction in vessel downtime following the completion of widening projects on the river Elbe.
Yesterday saw the opening of a 7km, 385-metre-wide ‘passing box’ on the river, between Wedel and Wittenbergen, allowing ships with a combined width of 98 metres to pass one another, thereby easing delays caused by time consuming one-way traffic restrictions.
Additionally, the fairway along a 36km …

Growth in global container demand dries up as trade war heats up

Global container demand growth slowed to just 1% over the first nine months of the year, as the US-China trade war put the brakes on liner expansion.
According to the latest review of the container sector by Bimco’s chief shipping analyst, Peter Sand, this sluggish growth compares with a much healthier 3.8% for the same period last year.
“The slowdown in demand is showing no signs of easing, and should the latest …
