Evergreen ULCV order will leave THE Alliance far behind rivals in terms of big ship capacity

Evergreen’s new order of 10 23,000 teu ULCVs will bring the Ocean Alliance close to parity with the 2M alliance in terms of the number of 18,000 teu-plus ships in their combined fleet, leaving THE Alliance well behind, according to Alphaliner.
The Taiwanese carrier officially confirmed in a stock market disclosure last week an order for the 10 mega ULCVs which are to be built at South Korean and Chinese yards …

‘Bigger box ships mean bigger risks for everyone’

It seems the ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) that have become the ‘new normal’ on the Asia-Europe tradelane have not proved as popular as the lines that operate them hoped.
Several shippers The Loadstar spoke to at Transport Logistic in Munich last week could not hide their aversion to the ocean behemoths – and it appears the insurance industry also has concerns.
In its 2019 Safety and Shipping review, Allianz says ULCVs “are of particular concern” …

From 15 to five in just a few years – shippers’ declining choice of container carriers

Shippers and forwarders that The Loadstar spoke to at Transport Logistic in Munich this week expressed concerns over the decreasing circle of carrier options open to them on tradelanes around the world.
A number were also confused over the bunker surcharge policy of container lines in respect to the IMO 2020 low-sulphur regulations.
A chief executive of a major global forwarders complained to The Loadstar that his carrier options were limited following …

18,000 teu container vessels were “a step too far”

Container lines may have overshot in terms of calculating the optimum size of vessels as they sought economies of scale, according to a new Long Read from The Loadstar.
In advance of this month’s TOC Container Supply Chain event in Rotterdam,  the decision of carriers to build vessels in the 18,000-22,000 teu ULCV class has one more been called into question, as new trends such as trade regionalisation and trade wars …

‘ASEAN tiger’ shippers say they don’t need ULCVs on the intra-Asia trade

As the ASEAN “tiger economies” continue to reshape the world’s largest container trade, some domestic shippers are questioning the industry’s march towards ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs).
With 31m teu and 100 port pairs, intra-Asia accounts for roughly one-in-four boxes shipped worldwide every year.
And, according Drewry director Han Ning, the rise of the “ASEAN tiger” economies is deepening the region’s trade ties, particularly between South-east Asia and the Far East’s “older tigers” …

Asia-Europe carriers must ‘think outside the box’ to counter impact of new tonnage

High capacity and low demand will leave ocean carriers on Asia-North Europe routes in a tight spot, with analysts suggesting even mild growth would seem a major victory.
Drewry said that, with demand remaining low, carriers were likely set to face the same challenges as last year, in absorbing new big ships into the trade.
“The average size of containership deployed increased by approximately 6% from the start to end of 2018, …

GPA unveils ambitious plans for huge expansion at the port of Savannah

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has underscored its ambition to maintain growth at the port of Savannah with plans to accommodate increasing numbers of ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs).
An expansion programme unveiled on 5 February outlines ambitions for the port to be able to handle six 14,000 teu ships simultaneously by 2024.
It can currently serve two at its Garden City container terminal, but by April this will go up to three ULCVs.

Carriers still aiming to add capacity on Asia-North Europe, despite softer demand

Despite warnings of uncertain times ahead for demand, ocean carriers plan to add around 10% more capacity to the Asia-North Europe route this year.
According to the latest Alphaliner analysis, with the addition of one new loop and the upsizing of other vessels, weekly capacity on the tradelane will surge by 28,000 teu to a weekly average of 300,000 teu from March.
This will add downward pressure on freight rates at the …

Container lines prepare for new capacity via new ULCVs and ‘ship-jumboisation’

MSC is set to receive some 330,000 teu of newbuild tonnage this year and will close the gap on its 2M partner, Maersk Line, in the capacity rankings.
According to new analysis by Alphaliner, MSC has the largest newbuild pipeline of all ocean carriers this year, with 20 vessels expected, for an aggregated total capacity of 334,550 teu.
It said the privately-owned carrier was also expected to launch a “ship-jumboisation” programme this …

Customer trust restored, claims HMM chief – now we need to work better together

In his traditional new year message to staff, HMM president and chief executive Chang Keun Yoo has called on employees to help “put an end to this difficult period” by improving communication between departments.
The South Korean carrier lost over $500m in the first nine months of last year, but has gambled its future on a $2.6bn order of 12 23,000 teu and eight 14,000 teu vessels stemmed for delivery from …
