WORLD ECONOMIC & MARKET DEVELOPMENTS

GLOBAL MARKETS:  Weighed down by renewed geopolitical tensions, the majority of Asian bourses ended in red territory today and major European equity markets opened lower, giving back some of their post-Fed gains. On the flipside, increased risk aversion along with the recent shift of both the ECB and the Fed to a more dovish stance, allowed fixed income markets to retain a...

WORLD ECONOMIC & MARKET DEVELOPMENTS

GLOBAL MARKETS:  Market uncertainty around the US-China trade dispute prevails, as the latest developments make it hard to expect a trade deal any time soon. Against this background, core government bonds retained a positive tone. In FX markets, the USD firmed, with the DXY index recording a fresh two-week intraday high of 97.878 earlier today following a flurry of positive US...

LONDON — British prime minister Theresa May has sacked her defense secretary for leaking sensitive information relating to Chinese involvement in the country’s future telecommunications projects.

Defense chief Gavin Williamson – who fought off proposed cuts to the Royal Navy last year – was dismissed after allegedly telling a journalist that tech firm Huawei would participate in the rollout of the U.K.’s 5G wireless network.

GLOBAL MARKETS:Asian stocks ended sharply higher earlier today and European bourses followed suit in early trade amid increased optimism about an ultimate trade agreement between the US and China in the not too distant future. PM must push Brexiteers against the wall, CCE and normalising monetary policy

United Kingdom’s PM Theresa May

Commentary: PM must push Brexiteers against the wall

By Joergen Oerstroem Moeller in Singapore

Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal has been rejected – again – because she is not in control of her party. In the probable case of no meaningful concessions being agreed with the EU, especially regarding the Irish backstop, May will be left with one option when she goes to parliament on 13 February. She must stand firm on her deal – amended or not – as the only...

GLOBAL MARKETS:UK Prime Minister Theresa May won the confidence vote in her government yesterday by 325-306, as expected. In her post-vote statement, she continued to be in favor of delivering a softer Brexit and expressed her intention to have talks with the leaders of all parties by the end of Monday in order to “find solutions that are negotiable” in the Brexit negotiations. Sterling capitalized on market optimism that a Brexit deal could be...

Power vacuum points to no-deal Brexit, The retreat of globalisation

Commentary: Power vacuum points to no-deal Brexit

Theresa May

By Joergen Oerstroem Moeller in Singapore

With her back to the wall, Theresa May seems to have forged a strategy to achieve her goals, however lofty or improbable they seem. If the opposition parties in parliament and those Conservatives who voted against her in Wednesday’s leadership challenge stand firm against May, the prime minister’s deal with Europe will fail. A power vacuum seems likely to arise in London. Unless May miraculously...

The BDI@1,353: another mild fall amidst global uncertainty… UK PM Theresa May wins Confidence Vote!!!

John Faraclas

The BDI (Baltic Dry Index) 11 points losses were considerably marginal given that yesterday the losses were almost double – 21 points down. Geopolitical uncertainties with the BREXIT taking more twists and turns. John Faraclas’ brief recap:

The Capes’ BCI lost 30 points – half of what were lost yesterday (minus 61 !) and now reads 2,153 points. Obviously its only the Capes that keep the interest in the Dry Markets…

The Panamaxes’ BPI lost nine points and now reads 1,445…

May deal faces near-impossible hurdles, In conversation with Caroline Atkinson

British PM Theresa May

Commentary: May deal faces near-impossible hurdles

By Joergen Oerstroem Moeller in Singapore

Prime Minister Theresa May would almost certainly try to counter a rejection of her Brexit deal in the UK parliament by returning with an amended version to avoid the more dramatic alternatives. To stand any chance of success, an amended deal must overcome two hurdles. First, May must keep her cabinet united – which seems unlikely to happen. Second, the EU must be forthcoming in...
