Another Montreal union joins indefinite industrial action

Following the announcement on Friday, 7 August, by Montreal’s International Longshoremen’s Union Local 375 (CUPE) of an indefinite strike, it has emerged that a sister union, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) Local 1657 (Checkers) has also given notice of strike action starting today, 10 August at 3pm local time.

Montreal dockers’ to start “unlimited” strike

Longshoremen in the Port of Montreal are about to escalate the long-running dispute with the Maritime Employers Association (MEA).

The two sides will continue to negotiate over the weekend to try and avert an indefinite strike, but with both sides claiming they offered a truce, which was rejected by their opposite numbers, it seems the MEA and the dockers remain far from a resolution.

Disappointing South Korean liner alliance reformed for another year

Korea Shipping Partnership, a quasi-alliance of all 14 South Korean liner operators, has extended its term by a year, even as its three years of existence failed to improve earnings.

Ship sales see FSL Trust withdraw from container sector

A lack of optimism over demand for container shipping has caused First Ship Lease Trust (FSLT) to retreat from the segment, with the sales of its last three container vessels.

The Singapore-listed shipping trust disclosed that the 2008-built 4,250TEU vessels, FSL Eminence (ex-YM Eminence), FSL Elixir (YM Elixir) and YM Enhancer, were sold for an undisclosed price on 5 August, to an unidentified buyer.

Bangkok Bridge to get crew change says Hapag-Lloyd

Following crew testing on the Bangkok Bridge and the Ital Lirica, Hapag-Lloyd a partner in the Africa-Asia services, the carrier has announced that the Bangkok Bridge has been diverted to the Philippines for a crew change.
