Corps awards Superior Marine $30M towboat contract

The Philadelphia Engineer District has awarded Superior Marine Ways Inc., South Point, Ohio, a $30,000,000 firm-fixed-price contract to construct, test and deliver towboats. Bids were solicited via the internet with one received. Work will be performed in South Point, Ohio, with an estimated completion date of July 1, 2027. FY 2025 Plant Replacement Improvement funds in the amount of $30,000,000 were obligated at the time of the award.

Jury convicts defendant in towboat pipe bomb case

Nathaniel Blayn Becker, the Marietta, Ohio, man arrested on October 28 last year after suspected destructive devices were found on several towboats, has been convicted on all four counts in a federal criminal indictment.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia says that, after a two-day trial, a federal jury convicted Becker on two counts of possession of an unregistered destructive device and two counts of placement of a destructive device on a vessel.

Coast Guard suspends search for missing mariners

The Coast Guard suspended its search for three missing mariners, Monday, after two towboats collided on the Mississippi River at mile marker 123, near Luling, La., Sunday. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report early Sunday morning that the 69’x30’x10′ towboat RC Creppel and the 186’x54’x10′ line haul towing vessel Cooperative Spirit collided near New Orleans. Four members of the RC Creppel went missing. One crewmember was later rescued.

Coast Guard investigating sinking of towboats

Last week, the Coast Guard transitioned from pollution response to the investigation phase of a major marine casualty that occurred July 5 on the Illinois River. It involved three towboats that sank in the river near Hardin, Ill.

Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River received a report of the three towboats and a deck barge that were tied together and were taking on water at mile marker 20.7 on the Illinois River. Sector UMR responded to the scene to find all three vessels fully submerged.
