Singapore spinoff Hyzon Motors makes US fuel cell trucking play

In the early 2000s, General Motors envisioned hundreds of thousands of fuel cell-powered vehicles on the road by 2010. Its research and development facility in the village of Honeoye Falls, New York, would be the nerve center of the ambitious plan.

It never happened. Instead, GM produced a few prototypes and 120 retrofitted Chevrolet Equinox SUVs used for two-week loans to consumers and businesses to acquaint them with driving on hydrogen power.

Rare air: Kenworth and Peterbilt electric trucks take on Pikes Peak

Kenworth and Peterbilt showed off real-world capability in driving battery-electric and hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric trucks to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado. But a more meaningful lesson came in descending the mountain.

The Kenworth T680 fuel cell electric vehicle and a battery-electric Peterbilt Model 579EV became the first Class 8 zero-emissions vehicles to negotiate grades between 7% and 10% that are part of the 12.42-mile Pikes Peak International Hill Climb course.

When Steve Girsky made the deal to take Nikola Corp. (NASDAQ: NKLA) public in a reverse merger in March, one of his first calls was to General Motors CEO Mary Barra. He wanted to shop the idea of the automaker working with the electric truck startup on batteries and fuel cells.

As former vice chairman at GM (NYSE: GM), Girsky knew the company had deep reservoirs of expertise in both technologies. Former GM fuel cell engineers advised Nikola even before Girsky’s VectoIQ special purpose...
