An Internet of Logistics could make it easier to share supply chain data

Container ports should spearhead an “Internet of Logistics” to tackle inefficiencies in global container supply chains.
According to PSA International chief executive Tan Chong Meng, a “connected community” beyond the scope of Internet of Things (IoT) technology is needed to improve data sharing.
“Our first ‘container port 4.0’ concept was very much an IoT-driven idea,” he said at the TPM Asia conference in Shenzhen last week.
“But when we started to look at …

Blockchain: is it really the panacea for container supply chains?

The benefits of blockchain-backed applications for container shipping came under the spotlight at the TPM Asia conference in Shenzhen last week.
And not all stakeholders are convinced this budding technology is the answer to the industry’s data sharing conundrum.
For APL chief executive Nicolas Sartini, an electronic bill of lading (e-bill) offers the best container shipping use-case for blockchain.

2020 sulphur fuel cap may spark a crisis for carriers that can’t recover the cost

The IMO’s 0.5% sulphur fuel cap will cause an “existential crisis” for container carriers, unless they can pass on the added bunker costs to shippers.
APL chief executive Nicolas Sartini said carriers had little choice but to opt for considerably more expensive low-sulphur fuel from January 2020, since the alternatives – using LNG or fitting ships with scrubbers – were not viable short-term solutions.
“We are 100% behind the regulation as it’s good …
