Death of Diplomacy – part 4

Further to our last back on the 8th of April , we are now entering the dire straits…

Here we go:

Alongside the Death of Diplomacy – and to an extent, of elements of Democracy – has come the birth of, let us call it, drone-ocracy. Stealthily-launched drones are a deadly nightmare in the great and small theatres of war, making a mockery of supposed ceasefires. Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan and now Kashmir are among victim-territories of this ghastly modern form of weaponry, often supporting substantial...

India/China armed clash sparks delay and extra costs to cross-border trade

Trade between China and India has suffered following a deadly border skirmish last month.
Since the brutal clash in the Himalayas on 15 June, which reportedly left 20 Indian soldiers dead, retaliatory measures between New Delhi and Beijing quickly spilled over into increased customs checks and delays for Chinese shipments entering India.
However, freight forwarders in India told The Loadstar exports from both sides had been affected.
“There are instances where buyers in …

A chill settles over perishables shippers as reefer shortage persists

Concerns over a shortage of reefer containers are still riding high, amid fresh warnings that supply is due fall well short of demand towards the end of the year, and into 2020.
The warning came from global head of seafreight reefer logistics at Kuehne + Nagel Frank Ganse, while Thomas Eskesen, founder of Eskesen Advisory, also envisages no improvement next year.
He pointed to the fact that orders for new reefer containers currently …

EU mulls tariffs on US exports to hit back at Trump threat

The trade war is escalating again. The EU is considering putting tariffs on more than $4bn of US exports, following President Trump’s threat to impose duty on $7bn of EU products, following the EU aid given to Airbus, reports CNBC. The WTO is set to authorise the US to impose tariffs on European goods because of allegedly illegal state aid for Airbus. The US tariffs will target planes, aircraft parts and luxury …

European carriers still suffering, but transpac lines receive a ‘tariff’ boost

This week’s Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) recorded further declines for Europe, but transpacific tradelanes rebounded as shippers struggled to digest the latest barrage of US/China trade tariffs.
The North Europe component of the SCFI fell another 4.5%, to $757 per teu, which is 19% below the level of the same week of last year.
And the more robust Mediterranean tradelane also suffered a spot market dip, of 7.6%, to $895 per …

US box ports report surprise growth in imports, despite tariffs

Despite the escalating US/China trade war, the ten biggest US container ports posted a surprisingly robust 2.7% year-on-year import throughput growth in July, for a cumulative 1,865,645 teu.
However, analyst John D McCown, of consultancy Blue Alpha Capital, still believes that the impact of tariffs on Chinese imports “will become dramatically more pronounced”.
The better-than-expected July numbers, which support the upbeat view of the transpacific market by Maersk last week, were mainly driven …

Transpacific rates take a tumble as trade war ripples spread

Efforts to push rates up on Asia-North Europe trades are still failing, and carriers are now also beginning to feel the pinch from the China-US trade wars.
The Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) today recorded spot rates for North Europe virtually unchanged, up just 0.2% to $812 per teu.
While this modest increase will allay some of concerns, there have been significant efforts to push rates up, with carriers removing a reported …

Supply chain radar: Peak season, what peak season?

“Global ship operators that normally begin the summer preparing for peak shipping season instead are bracing for a surge in tariffs. Executives say they are concerned that recent weakness in shipping rates sends an ominous signal just as some major economies are starting to stumble and trade tensions are rising.” – Wall Street Journal, June 2019.
This is normally the time of the year when, full of enthusiasm, ocean carriers …
