Container carriers are expected to provide more deepsea capacity out of Asia over the Chinese New Year holiday, beginning 12 February, than in any other year.
Announced blank sailings for what is normally shipping’s slack season are far fewer this year than previously, according to data from liner database eeSea’s Blank Sailings Tracker.

Maersk and MSC drop Felixstowe from transatlantic service and head for Liverpool

2M partners Maersk and MSC are swapping Felixstowe for Liverpool on their TA2/NEUATL2 transatlantic loop from the end of the year, in order to “provide stability to the service”.

More blank sailings as Hapag-Lloyd sets new Asia-N Europe freight rate record

THE Alliance plans to blank a quarter of its Asia-North Europe sailings in the first week of December, coinciding with lead line Hapag-Lloyd’s plans to hike its rates on the route by 70%.

Carriers boost capacity on the transatlantic to keep pace with demand

Transatlantic shippers can look forward to an increase in capacity on the trade, as both the 2M and THE alliances introduce larger ships.
According to liner analyst Alphaliner, 2M partners Maersk and MSC are upgrading the TA2/NEUATL2 service by replacing the five 4,800 teu ships with vessels in the 5,500-8,800 teu range.

Industrial shipper Manitou to use wind-powered transatlantic ro-ro vessels

A new age of sail tacked another step closer this week when French industrial machinery manufacturer Manitou announced it would use a Neoline wind-powered ro-ro vessel.
Manitou has agreed to “transport all aerial work platforms and telehandlers manufactured by Manitou Group in France via a primarily wind-powered cargo ship heading for the North American market”.

More carriers must blank voyages to avoid transatlantic rate collapse

Transatlantic demand continues to be hit by the pandemic, obliging carriers to extend voyage-blanking programmes and putting rates under pressure.

Carriers have weathered the Covid storm, suggests OOCL trading update

OOCL carried fewer boxes but improved its revenue in the second quarter, providing the industry with some hard evidence that ocean carriers successfully managed the demand turbulence of the pandemic.
The Cosco subsidiary saw liftings decline 4.6% in the quarter, compared with the same period of the previous year, to 1,688,055 teu. However, turnover was up 1.1% to $1.58bn.
