Trump telework reversal undermines aviation security, ex-TSA official says

The new Trump administration’s directive that federal employees return to the office full time will drive away skilled professionals who are protecting the aviation system from terrorist threats, a former Transportation Security Administration official warned Friday.

Douglas Brittin, who headed the TSA’s air cargo division a decade ago, said in a letter to the House Homeland Security Committee that the the mandate to phase out remote work without sufficient planning or accommodation will lead to...

TSA security exemption for unwieldy air cargo sunsets Oct. 31

MIAMI — Companies that ship oversize or liquid products could be prevented from using air transport if by Oct. 31 they don’t adopt security measures to check for explosives. That’s when  a Transportation Security Administration exemption from 100% cargo screening expires.

The U.S. two years ago implemented a scan-all requirement for international outbound shipments moving on freighter aircraft, raising the security bar to the same level in place for a decade for cargo carried on passenger...

TSA mandates new cybersecurity guidelines for railroads

The Transportation Security Administration is requiring U.S. freight and passenger railroads to comply with a new cybersecurity directive aimed at protecting the rail networks from harm.

The directive focuses on performance-based measures, according to TSA, and “will further enhance cybersecurity preparedness and resilience for the nation’s railroad operations.”

To safeguard against any cyber-related disruptions or degradations to rail infrastructure, TSA is requiring freight and passenger rail...

TSA directs freight railroads to bolster cybersecurity, report incidents

Chemical rail cars sit on a track to illustrate an article about new cybersecurity requirements in the freight rail sector.

Freight railroads will be required to report cyber incidents within 24 hours as part of a new Transportation Security Administration directive issued Thursday aimed at strengthening cybersecurity in the sector.

The directive, which takes effect Dec. 31, also mandates that all freight rail operators designate a cybersecurity coordinator, develop an incident response plan and conduct a vulnerability assessment. TSA also issued similar directives for passenger rail and public transit operators.

“Thes...

Audit recommends enhancements for DHS air cargo security programs

A worker secures cover over a large air cargo pallet.

A new audit by Congress’ investigative arm is recommending two Department of Homeland Security agencies tighten up programs designed to protect against terrorists smuggling concealed explosives into the U.S. through air cargo.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Transportation Security Administration need to do a better job of sharing trend data on shipments and evaluating new screening technology, respectively, the report said.

The Government Accountability Office recommended that CBP...

TSA to exempt ‘secure’ exporters from new air cargo screening

A forklift moves wooden pallets of goods at an airfreight warehouse.

Three weeks before new security rules go into effect for all export cargo moving by air, the Transportation Security Administration has finalized plans giving businesses the ability to opt out of screening every shipment prior to loading if their facilities have approved security controls. The air cargo industry is splintered over whether an alternative approach will provide the same protection and be fairly applied.

The TSA said manufacturers, suppliers, warehouses, vendors, e-commerce...

AskWaves: What is a TWIC card?

When securing drivers for shipments that require entry into a maritime facility, transportation and logistics workers are often introduced to the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the program is administered to assess security threats within American seaports.

In 2001, the TWIC program was created after the passage of the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA). The MTSA was a response to the 9/11...

Air cargo goes crazy for K-9 security

A canine team inspect boxes inside an air shipping container for explosives.

Demand is high for dogs in the air logistics sector, and it’s not because they make nice companions during the self-isolation of coronavirus.

In just four months, new international security standards go into effect requiring countries to implement programs for 100% screening of every shipment on all-cargo aircraft. It’s a huge undertaking for the private sector, which is still waiting for the U.S. Transportation Security Administration to issue rules detailing how to achieve that goal.
