Port restrictions remain as Elsa nears Florida landfall

The Coast Guard is continuing port condition Zulu for the ports of Tampa, St. Petersburg, Manatee and Fort Myers as Tropical Storm Elsa glides by Florida’s west coast. The condition was set at midnight Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Elsa was dumping heavy rain in the Florida Keys Tuesday morning after wreaking havoc in the Caribbean as a Category 1 hurricane over the long holiday weekend.

After blasting through the eastern Caribbean over the weekend, killing at least three people, Tropical Storm Elsa was nearing landfall in western Cuba as of Monday morning.

Deadly Tropical Storm Elsa heading toward mainland US

Elsa has weakened back to a tropical storm, but not before killing at least three people in the Caribbean.

One death was reported in St. Lucia, according to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency. Meanwhile, a 15-year-old boy and a 75-year-old woman died Saturday in separate events in the Dominican Republic after walls collapsed on them, according to a statement from the Emergency Operations Center.

Tropical Storm Elsa to lash Caribbean islands

Tropical Storm Elsa quickly developed late Wednesday night as it moved slowly across the western Atlantic. It’s making a beeline for the Caribbean, possibly followed by southern Florida.

As of 5 a.m. EDT Thursday, Elsa was a low-end tropical storm, centered about 865 miles southeast of the Windward Islands and producing maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. Winds have to be 39 mph to qualify as a tropical storm.
