The governors of New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency late Wednesday as record-breaking rainfall from Ida’s remnants led to major flooding. At least nine people reportedly died as a result of the storm.

Ida came ashore yesterday in Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane. It is now Tropical Storm Ida, still battering parts of Louisiana and Mississippi and leaving more than one million people without electricity.

Louisiana governor John Bel Edwards reminded residents of his state that “The first 72 are on you,” a way of saying that citizens should be equipped to provide for themselves, their families and their pets for at least three days following a major storm.

Hurricane Ida’s flooding and wicked winds have led to impassable roads in many parts of southeastern Louisiana. High water as well as trees, power lines and other debris have forced law enforcement and other officials to close entire roads or sections of roads across the region.
