Amogy: Don’t burn hydrogen, split ammonia instead

The future of hydrogen as a transportation fuel has numerous hurdles to climb, but one of the most basic is just how it gets used in an engine.

Most of the focus has been on the debate between combustion — using hydrogen in an internal combustion engine engineered for it — or injecting it into an onboard storage tank where it is then fed into a fuel cell. The fuel cell generates electricity and the waste product is water.

Both have environmental issues. Combustion of hydrogen creates problematic...

March Class 8 truck orders reset to normalized demand

The ups and downs of Class 8 truck orders appear to be returning to a normalized pattern with manufacturers sitting on a healthy backlog of trucks to build.

Nearly all build slots are filled for 2023. That prompted slower order activity of 19,000 units in March, FTR Transportation Intelligence reported Tuesday.

Reduced order levels will continue through the summer, historically a weaker period for bookings. That normalcy was upended during the pandemic. Lower year-over-year orders in five of the...

California gets EPA waiver to move ahead with Advanced Clean Trucks rule

California’s Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) rule, which goes hand in hand with its Advanced Clean Fleets (ACF) rule as part of a push to lower emissions from the state’s trucking sector, has been granted an expected waiver from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The ACT was already further along the approval process than the ACF. ACT mandates numbers of zero-emission vehicles that OEMs must sell into the state as a percentage of their total fleet. ACF sets rules that mandate the percentage of...

Amazon-funded startup tackles storage issue as key in hydrogen trucking

HOUSTON — Consensus in the hydrogen transportation ecosystem — is it too early to call it an industry? — can be hard to come by.

When it comes to talking about hydrogen fueling trucks, the one widely held belief is the infrastructure challenges remain immense to allow it to be a reliable and extensively available fuel for heavy-duty trucking.

But there are many questions that first need to be answered about how hydrogen in the truck will work. Will it be injected as a gas or a liquid? Will it go...

Hydrogen and trucking at CERAWeek: Huge opportunity, enormous costs

At S&P Global by CERAWeek, a festival of everything hydrogen, trucking and the H element was a frequent topic of both general and highly focused presentations on companies’ specific hydrogen-based solutions.

But at a panel covering three major parts of the hydrogen supply chain and featuring providers of the fuel (Chevron), builders of applications (Toyota) and a manufacturer of fuel cells that are key to making hydrogen a reality in trucking (Ballard), presenters said collaboration along the...

3 legacy manufacturers unveil medium-duty electric trucks

The medium-duty field for electric trucks grew by four new entries on Wednesday as Mack Truck, Isuzu and Hino Trucks revealed battery-powered models.

All three made their announcements at the NTEA Work Truck Week industry trade show in Indianapolis.

For Mack, the MD electric joins its lineup of Class 6-7 medium duties it assembles in Roanoke, Virginia, where Mack reentered the medium-duty market in 2020 after a two-decade hiatus. Mack builds a Class 8 LR Electric refuse hauler in Pennsylvania.

“Thi...
