NFI “Trader Joe’s” classification suit headed toward mediation…again

A lawsuit filed against NFI back in 2015 over issues of driver classification – a case that has still not been resolved roughly five years later – is going to mediation…again.

And that’s not actually unusual, according to two attorneys for the plaintiffs.

The case, on behalf of a group of plaintiffs who were NFI drivers, was first filed back in 2015. A long list of all the documents filed in the case – a list that goes on for more than 160 entries – shows that the case’s meandering path through...

New trailer orders fell to near zero in April

Trailer welder

Preliminary net orders for trailers in April fell to just 300 bookings, the lowest level since 1990.

The 95% drop in orders from March and 98% decline from April 2019 put orders during the past 12 months at 162,000, according to FTR Transportation Intelligence.

The impact of the health crisis on manufacturing and an already slowing market for equipment combined to cause many fleets to effectively close their order books and cancel or push out orders scheduled for 2020 delivery.

“There are still...

Mexico creates confusion, announces auto factories will reopen June 1

In the face of a worsening health crisis, the Mexican government announced that auto factories may reopen on June 1, and not Monday as originally announced.

The new decree is a reversal from Mexican President Andres Manuel Obrador’s recent announcement that construction, mining and auto manufacturing would be considered “essential activities,” and could resume next week.

The new decree to restart factories June 1 came as a surprise to many auto industry officials who were expecting to open next...

Startup aims to democratize digital freight management

J.J. Singh, a longtime transportation and logistics executive, decided to launch a digital freight management solutions company a few years ago after he realized that many small and medium-size shippers, brokers and carriers were not ready for “the Amazon world,” a pressure cooker environment that requires an immediate answer to the question: “‘Where is your load?’”

“We knew from the start these folks were at a cost disadvantage and an effectiveness disadvantage,” said Singh, whose previous...

Keys to dash cam acceptance are transparency and incentives

Transparency and incentives are key to gaining driver acceptance for dash cams (Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves)

Within the trucking industry, opinions on installing dash cams have oscillated between skepticism and conviction. On one end of the spectrum are drivers, who are resistant to dash cams, as some believe they infringe on their privacy. Fleet managers feel otherwise, because dash cams can help promote safer driving and provide immunity in courts.

“Change and uncertainty always cause stress. Drivers can sometimes assume the worst about any change. I think that goes not just for drivers, but for all...

The views expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of FreightWaves or its affiliates.

We are in uncharted waters as a world, a country, and a freight economy. Networks have been disrupted, plants shuttered, trucks parked, and drivers unemployed. Carriers and brokers are doing what they can to get through the worst of the disruption while planning for the restart of the economy as North America emerges from the shutdown. Shippers are using the...

Depressed used truck prices fall lower in April

Used Trucks of Texas

Prices for Class 8 used trucks continued to fall in April, though some improvement in auction activity gave hope the bottom of the market is near.

Same-dealer sales were off 8% in April compared to March as the first full month of the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the overall economy. Volumes fell 5% compared to the same month a year ago, according to ACT Research.

Month-over-month used truck prices fell 8%, ACT said.

“Our first reaction to the unit sales data was one of surprise that the market held...
