Middle East trade surges, leading box lines to launch new services

With Far East-Middle East container volumes seeing double-digit growth year-on-year, several liner operators have added more services to this lane.

Japan’s joint venture Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Taiwanese intra-Asia carrier TS Lines are launching the South China-Middle East Express (SMX) service on 8 November, connecting the southern Chinese ports of Shekou, Da Chan Bay, and Nansha with Jebel Ali and Hamad. TS Lines is assigning a 2,900 TEU ship to SMX, while ONE said it will nominate a...

TS Lines makes another attempt at IPO

Taiwanese regional carrier TS Lines has made a third attempt at an initial public offering on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Earlier attempts in 2022 and 2023 stalled as the container shipping market corrected after the Covid-19-enabled boom.

However, having submitted another prospectus on 30 May, TS Lines appears to have been encouraged to try again due to the current renewed bull run.

The company, which has appointed JP Morgan and China Merchants Securities as its listing sponsors, said that...

The 2013-built boxship had 18 crew members and 1,189 containers onboard, but no injuries have been reported at the time of writing.

WK Webster noted that...

TS Lines to fit scrubbers on more ships

Τaiwanese intra-Asia carrier TS Lines will step up scrubber installation on its ships, as the price spread between high-sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) and low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) widens amid surging oil prices.

Last year, the price spread ranged from US$240 to US$264 per tonne, more than doubling from the spread of US$112 per tonne in 2021 and rocketing from US$92 per tonne in 2020, when the International Maritime Organisation’s global sulphur cap kicked in.

The situation was exacerbated by Russia’s...

TS Lines gets oil spill damage overturned on appeal

Taiwan’s High Court on 19 October overturned an earlier ruling that obliged TS Lines to pay approximately US$5 million in damages to fishermen whose livelihoods were allegedly affected after TS Taipei, one of the company’s boxships, ran aground and broke in two in March 2016.

Marine fuel spilled from the wreckage had allegedly affected fishermen in the area, but TS Lines appealed, saying there was no proof that the accident damaged the fishing industry.

TS Taipei, a 2006-built 1,574 TEU ship, ran...
