U.S. Coast Guard, partner agencies respond to tug fire

The U.S. Coast Guard and partner agencies were responding to a tug fire near Pea Patch Island on the Delaware River, Tuesday.

All four crewmembers were safely evacuated from the vessel. The tug fire has since been extinguished, and the vessel is now under tow.

Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay launched crews from Station Philadelphia and a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City to assist.

Powerful Sanmar-built Boğaçay tug joins sister in Croatia

A second versatile multi-purpose tugboat built by Turkey’s Sanmar Shipyards has now joined its twin sister at Rijeka, Croatia’s principal seaport. Known as Boğaçay LXXII while under construction, the tug, renamed TItan by its new owner, is the second built by Sanmar under a two-tug contract placed by Italian shipping group Scafi for its Croatian subsidiary Jadranski Pomorski Servis. It is now working alongside sister Boğaçay Series tugboat Moretto.

U.K. MAIB reports on deadly capsize of tug Biter

The U.K. Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has now published its accident investigation report into the girting [girding] and capsize of the tug Biter off Greenock, Scotland on February 2023. Biter was attached to the stern of the passenger vessel Hebridean Princess and the tug’s two crew were unable to escape from the capsized vessel and lost their lives.

AUDIO: Coast Guard rescues 5 from tug Luther

The U.S. Coast Guard has released dramatic audio from an incident Friday in which five people were rescued from the 130-foot commercial tug Luther after it lost steering off the coast of La Push, Wash.

At 4:10 p.m., the Luther lost steering and was beset by weather while towing a concrete barge 10 miles off the coast of La Push and requested assistance from the Coast Guard. Alaska Marine Lines overhauls retired tugboat

The 120- by 34-foot Polar King, a Robin-class tug built at McDermott Shipyard in 1974, is being overhauled by Alaska Marine Lines. According to Kris Mullan, port engineer for Alaska Marine Lines, who said the project kicked off in April, around eight similar tugs were built at the yard, four of which are owned by Alaska Marine Lines.

NTSB: Incorrect lineup led to tugboat strike on Hylebos Bridge fender system

The National Transportation Safety Board has released its report on an October 2023 incident in which the deteriorated fender system protecting the Hylebos Bridge in Tacoma, Wash., was damaged beyond repair last October after being struck by a tugboat assisting an ATB.

The NTSB report says that the captain of the ATB did not line up the vessel correctly to safely transit under the bridge.
