Commentary: $1B balance sheet could help limit TuSimple’s reputation damage

“When winter comes, I’ll keep on moving. Tell me where my friends go.” — Oingo Boingo

The abandonment of TuSimple Holdings by investors, its manufacturing partner and a host of others suggests the one-time leader in autonomous trucking has hit bottom.

It probably has. But its billion-dollar balance sheet suggests it can recover from its wounds, several of which are self-inflicted.

For example, had co-founder Xiaodi Hou resisted the temptation to take over as CEO in March, many of the problems...

Truck Tech: SPAC ‘stonks’ edition

Wanna buy SPAC-backed electrification and autonomous stocks? They are cheap, but have they hit bottom yet? A new Morning Consult poll shows autonomy has significant trust issues to overcome, and try as we might, we just can’t miss the bus when it comes to electrification.

Wanna buy my (SPAC) stonks?

It’s hard to find many stocks moving up against headwinds of rising inflation, war in Ukraine, and the coming and going — and coming again — of COVID variants.

But the beatdown of electric vehicle and...

TuSimple Holdings shares, battered since announcing a sudden leadership change earlier in March, rebounded Wednesday after Reuters reported the autonomous truck developer may offload its autonomous trucking business in China.

TuSimple (NASDAQ: TSP), which leads the commercialization of autonomous trucking in the U.S., hasn’t talked much about its China business, which focused on deepwater ports near Shanghai. TuSimple is in talks to sell the unit for up to $1 billion, Reuters said, citing three...

Analysis: Normally transparent TuSimple bungles leadership change, rattling investors

For a young public company known for transparency, TuSimple Holdings’ sudden replacement of Cheng Lu as CEO with co-founder Xiaodi Hou showed that unexpected moves rattle investors. And shaken investors sell stock.

A lot of stock.

TuSimple is trading near its all-time low. For the week, it was down 32.65%, with most of the damage on Thursday, the day of the announcement.

The timing and immediate execution appeared to be a PR blunder with volatile markets already spooked by inflation fears and...

US takes limited oversight of TuSimple as foreign investment probe ends

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) has wrapped up its national security probe into autonomous truck software developer TuSimple Holdings Inc., which agreed to limited U.S. oversight and pledged to keep U.S.-developed core technology out of China.

“I think in short this is a clean bill of health from the U.S. government,” TuSimple CEO Cheng Lu told FreightWaves on Tuesday evening.

CFIUS, an interagency committee authorized to review certain transactions involving...
