WinGD awards dual fuel/LNG validation for Mobilgard 40 AC cylinder oil

ExxonMobil’s advanced 40BN cylinder oil, Mobilgard 540 AC, has been validated by WinGD for use in its dual fuel engines with conventional fuels, including methanol, and now LNG. The high performance cylinder oil, which also has an approval from MAN ES for use in its two-stroke engines, was developed for use in slow-speed, two-stroke marine engines operating on fuels with up to 0.50% sulfur content, LNG, ethane, methanol and LPG.

ExxonMobil says that Mobilgard 540 AC has demonstrated an excellent...

World first: Large marine two-stroke runs successfully on 100% hydrogen

100% hydrogen test

In what’s being claimed as a world first for the maritime industry, Japan’s Mitsui E&S Co. Ltd, a MAN Energy Solutions’ licensee, has successfully tested a 50-centimeter bore MAN B&W two-stroke engine at up to 100% load while running on hydrogen.

In collaboration with MAN Energy Solutions, Mitsui converted one of the four cylinders of an MAN B&W ME-GI (-Gas Injection) engine to hydrogen operation. The hydrogen was supplied from a hydrogen fuel supply system that Mitsui developed in 2023.

The ME-GI...

W&O Supply adds low-leakage valves to its portfolio

Can the right valves help vessel operators reduce their carbon footprints? W&O Supply has partnered with Broen Clorius Controls to add Clorius low-leakage valves to its portfolio of marine valves, actuated valves, pipes and engineered solutions. The new product is an ultra-low leak three-way valve especially designed for the HT cooling water systems on two-stroke main engines. By increasing system efficiency, it helps save fuel and thus reduce CO2 emissions.

W&O Supply says that, compared to...

WinGD wins LR approval in principle for ammonia-fueled two-stroke engines

As the race to be first to market with future-fueled engines picks up pace, Lloyd’s Register has granted Winterthur, Switzerland, headquartered engine designer WinGD the first ever approval in principle (AiP) for its ammonia-fueled two‑stroke engines. The AiP was awarded for WinGD’s X-DF-A dual-fuel range and gives shipowners the assurances they need to realize vessel designs using ammonia-fueled main engines.

WinGD says that its ammonia-fueled two-stroke engine series research has been...

Hyundai orders world’s first ME-GA engines

MAN Energy Solutions has booked the first orders for its new low pressure ME-GA two-stroke stroke engine. HHI-EMD (Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine Machinery Division) has ordered a dozen of them.

Six new 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carriers will each be powered by two 5G70ME-GA10.5 engines.

KLC and Pan Ocean have each ordered two of the ships, while Knudsen and JP Morgan have each ordered a single vessel. On delivery to the shipowners from Hyundai’s Shipbuilding Division (HHI-SBD) in Korea, they...

Flag state approval clears way for first conversion of LPG carrier to LPG fueling

Following acceptance of the design by the Isle of Man Ship Registry, BW LPG is to go ahead with its plan to convert the engines of 12 of its Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC) to dual fuel LPG operation.

The conversions will be the first of a VLGC to run on LPG. After the conversion the vessels will also receive the newly developed DNV GL class notation “GF LPG.”

The flag state acceptance of the design by the Isle of Man means that the project has been demonstrated to have an equivalent level of...
